Can anyone sugget where to go to get an oil change cheap?
What oil do I need (2.5 engine)?
National tyres seem cheap. Are they any good?

A local Vauxhall specialist replaced the gaskets James.
I“m sure it will need doing again though soon but at least it doesn“t look like it“s on fire now.

Would suggest doing it yourself, took me 20 mins on Sunday to do mine. Or get someone off here to give you a hand, always better to have a go at doing things, that way you know how to do it the next time :y. Oil and filters are discussed in a few posts, do a search and you should find the info

Why would it need doing soon, if it's just been done by a VX Specialist? ::)
Edit to add - make 100% sure they properly cleaned out breathers, and did they use geniune VX gaskets?

10/40 semi-synthetic Kate.If you get a trade card its very cheap from vx as is the oil filter.
If you have some basic tools the oil change is a 20 minute job. :y

Would I need to put the car up on ramps to change the oil?
As for the gaskets I asked the mechanic to use genuine VX parts but he only charged £85 for the job so I guess he didn't.
I don't know about the breathers.
Being a woman I get treat like I'm stupid by mechanics.
Unless it's just because I am stupid! ;D

I get mine done at National Tyre and I haven't had a problem. Well, it's not strictly true - there was a case of a stripped sump plug a long time ago, which was a bit of an issue, but it's likely that it was over-tightened the previous time and I'm not sure that was at National Tyre. Anyway, they got a guy in to helicoil to sump as a favour, so they sorted it all out.
The oil change costs £28 and that includes the filter and 6 litres of 10/40W semi synthetic (Castrol Magnatec, so good oil too). I can't even buy the oil for that price so for me it's just not worth getting under the car.
In fact, because it's less than £30 I get it done every 3000 miles as the miles are clocking up a bit now.

You can if you get a Trade Club Card via eg Autobahnstormers.

I must say Kate I would personally do it myself out of pride as I couldn't stand some spotty kid doing something on my car that I am can do without thinking. ;) So often they can bugger up the sump plug! >:(
It is a very straight forward job Kate, and yes it is easier to have the car on axles stands or a ramp to get to the oil filter from below. ;) Twenty minutes tops it takes. 8-)
It is also a good thing for you to do as you can inspect the condition of the oil that comes out, inspect the underside of the engine, and get the great satisfaction afterwards knowing you have done it! 8-) 8-) 8-)

Didn't know about Autobahnstormers, so if it's possible to get the stuff at a decent price then I'd have to agree with the two previous posts and under these circumstances I'd do it myself. There is an advantage in having a look under the car yourself and as Lizzie Zoom says you can check the oil coming out.
In fact, when I've finished writing this I'll get on to the Autobahnstormers website and find out how to get a card!

Sorry - but I find that quite unkind, steroetypical and a little ill thought out.
Consider replacing the term "spotty kid" with "inexperienced mechanic" and it will sound a million times more reasonable.

I agree with James also. I am currently at college doing city and guilds in automotive servicing and repair. I am in with a group of much younger people and some of those are very capable!!! Although I have to admit they are a bit spotty ;D

Mr V6CDX, you are neither no longer young (you old git ;D) or spotty, so don't take offence at the spotty kid fresh out of school and trusted with your pride and joy with minimal training/experience, and excessive productivity targets.

Well I don't really want some fat old spotty woman called Kate maintaining the mig either. Anyone else would be better!
I know I'd end up with five litres of oil on my face and probably on fire as well! :o

Actually I'm sorry if I sounded harsh, because I'm as aware as anyone else that there are some real incompetent and ham fisted mechanics out there.
I was just making a point they they are most definately not limited to younger kids -
When I look back on some of the crap garages told me (Which I took in) when I was younger, it makes me feel sick.
Knowing what I know now, I'd have saved myself a fortune :'(
