Title: Knocking noise
Post by: bighed on 03 December 2008, 16:10:56
Did an oil change on sunday. Started car this morning and left running to defrost windscreen and went back inside.

When I came back out I could hear a light knocking noise coming from bottom of engine

This noise "goes away" after about 2500 rpm

Any ideas  :-/

Have you checked the oil level since changing it and what oil did you use?

I thought if it was bigend the noise would stay or get worse up the revs??  :-/

Not checked oil since no.

Will go do that now.

Oil was 10 40 castrol magnatec as got a very good deal on it

Sticky cam follower/lifter?

Does oil get round that much on tickover?

If it's big ends your know there is nothing light about them when they go they knock!  Providing you've have filled the sump enough and the car was fine before I'd say it's very doubtful it's big ends.

It could be lots of other things check you haven't loosened something and forgot to retighten it or that something hasn't loosened off due to the cold.  Engines do make odd noises at times or you are hearing a normal noise differently and once you hear it it will just seem to get worse and worse it's probably nothing at all.

Just check over everything and monitor it.

Sump plug?  ::)  :y  :y  :y

I have seen that done. Old oil had been dropped, and the new oil had been poured straight onto the floor ...... via the sump drain ......   ;D  ;D

Wouldnt the noise be coming from the top of the engine if it was this?  :-/

Two more quick questions also  ::)

Can anyone suggest a decent place to get a new drivers track rod end from as prices and quality vary so much on ebay

Also when braking on ice today and abs kicked in it was very loud in shuddered the whole car and steering and didnt sound too clever.

To be honest this is the first time I have heard the abs since buying the car 12 months ago  :-/

True but sometimes you can think a noise is coming from towards the bottom of what you can see.

Take away the plenum, intake manifold etc and the top of the engine looks like its in the middle/bottom of the engine bay

yep sounds perfectly normal....

when the ABS kicks in and one of the wheels locks it feels like the whole front suspension has detached itself, very odd feeling

That's where I bought mine from a couple of months back. Seems ok
to me. Received it by return post, nicely boxed up and protected
inside the box with plastic wrap.

Fitted perfectly. All steering play nicely eliminated, sailed through MOT.

Its not exhaust manifold as already got that noise (drivers side) with a new vx manifold sat downstairs. Just got to find someone willing to fit it for a decent price. :-/ :y

I needed a track rod end for MOT too, cost £29 at local motor factors. That was for the whole rod - initially I just got the outer arm, but couldn't detach the old one from the joining tube, so replaced the whole lot.

Very easy to do - once you have a ball joint tool!!!  ;D

Did you use engine flush at all??? when doing your oil change??

Hi, late reply. No didnt use engine flush  :y

So do you have to fit a FULL track rod arm or con the first piece be refitted on its own?
