Title: how to remove driver's airbag
Post by: chartz on 14 December 2008, 02:48:08
Good morning,

I find it dangerous to play with radio commands while driving, so I bought used wheel remote commands from a scrapyard.
However, I can't figure how to remove the airbag. Any precautions ?

Thanks.

disconnect battery and wait for 30 minutes before commencing work.
undo 2 screws (torx iirc) on the underside of steering wheel.
The airbag unit can be lifted  off steering wheel, unplug electrical connector and unit can be completely removed.
Hope this helps. :y

Thanks.
Why is it necessary to unplug the battery and leave it alone for 30 min ?
Is there anything prone to fall on the floor when I pull the airbag unit ?

The airbag ECU monitors the circuits whenever the battery is connected, so if you leave it powered, it will activate the warning light and disable the entire system once you remove the airbag and you'll need a Tech 2 to reset it. :y

Not to mention the possibility of it deploying whilst you are buggering around with it :o
