Title: Hydraulic lock on a v6. Is it dead?
Post by: seastate on 15 December 2008, 22:39:07
I drove through a 'puddle' yesterday that ended up being a bit deeper than I had at first thought.
Just as I got through the engine died.
I managed to get the water out of the big inlet tube  - it was literally brimful and took out the plugs and turned it over and lots of water pumped out.
It then started but it wasn't firing on all cylinders.
I drove home (about 50 miles) and changed the plugs and oil.

The right hand side bank doesn't work at all though.  I checked and theres a spark on all the plugs and they all have compression (between 13 and 14Bar) and I can see little puffs of petrol when I turn it over.  The plugs on that side though are black with oil and even a quick turn over seems to dirty them.

What could have happened?

I think my next task is to get the top off and look to see what I can but I'm no expert and I'd really appreciate any advice on possible causes and checks I could make to see exactly whats wrong.

Thanks a lot  :)

If they are getting oily that quick (and not fuel), something catastrophic has happened, though the decent compression implies otherwise  :-/

Odd that they're not firing with decent compression. I would expect catastrophic damage to result in a couple of pots with no compression. Any nasty knocking noises when it is running?

Might be worth turning it over with your foot flat on the floor a few times (it shouldn't start) then starting normally, just in case a few cylinders have got flooded with fuel or the bores have been washed clean.

It's possible the MAF has been damaged if water got to it, so might be worth trying to run it with that disconnected. Could be throwing in far too much fuel if the MAF is misreading. Then again, I would have expected it to throw a fault code in that case. Is the EML on? Have you tried reading codes?

Like what Kevin says, if theres compression, it SHOULD run - Yes it may bang and rattle if its bent a rod (and then go bang when your least expecting it  :o) but it should run!

Are the HT leads on in the correct order? Is fuel deffo getting in?

As Kevin says, I wouldn't think there would be too much wrong as the compression is OK.

Don't abandon hope
I did the same with the Traktor in July 2007
Removed injectors, blew out all of the water, Oil change, new air filter (yours will be soggy) & there is a God! :)
