Hi everyone and Merry Christmas! ::) ::) ::) ::) ::)
My engine has started to make a regular 'chirp' noise like a bird.
It's running fine though. I was just a bit worried.
Any idea what it might be?
Thanks a lot for any advice! :y

Aux belt tensioner.

Aux belt tensioner.
Thanks James. Is that a big job?
How are you by the way?

Maybe it's got bird flu ::) ;D ;D.
I'll get me coat again :-X.
Merry Christmas Kate :-*.

Well if that really is the cause - a new pulley is £26 and it's a few minutes to fit.
You can also remove the old ones and pack them out with grease.

Aux belt Tensioner is quite an easy job Kate.
Remove the pipe with the yellow cross, turn the bolt marked with red arrow anti-clockwise(15mm i think)and slip belt off tensioner and then remove where the blue arrow is pointing and just to the left of and behind the tensioner the 2 torx bolts that hold tensioner on, done :).
If the tensioner if U/S then replace but as James suggested you can repack the bearings with grease :).

Aux belt tensioner.
or.... less likely and more worringly, cambelt tensioner.
Easy to diagnose: drop the aux belt off, start up and listen for noise: no noise meas it must be the aux belt/tensioner. Nois remaining: look elsewhere.
p.s. I got this when I fitted a new VX timing belt kit and aux belt. I traced it to the timing belt kit

I had this just after I'd fitted a new timing belt, water pump and aux belt. I'd re-packed the aux belt tensioner with grease as it was bone dry - turned out I hadn't torqued up the aux belt pulleys enough.
I'd second the idea of changing the aux belt and re-greasing the tensioner - Though you have to turn the tensioner CLOCKWISE (highlighted with the red arrow) to release the tension. Find a spanner that's comfortable to hold tightly as you have to put a bit of a heave into it to release the tension!
it's a dead easy job to do, can be done with few tools and takes about half an hour - I did it whilst doing the rest of the work and I had no previous experience of engine work at all.
EDIT: Just to be clear - to release the tension on the aux belt, use a 15mm spanner on the tensioner bolt (red arrow) and heave clockwise - you'll see the belt go slack - whilst holding the tension slip the belt off. (Mind fingers!)
Undo the two blots holding the tensioner to the engine block (down the side of the engine) - once the tensioner assembly is off then obviously remove the tensioner pulley bolt anti-clockwise. The V6 Cambelt DVD shows how to re-pack the tensioner pulley with grease - it's a quick job once you have the pulley in your hand.

Well thanks for all that advice, that's really nice of you!
I'll get the spanners out then!
Merry Christmas everyone! Hope you all have a great one! ::) ::) ::) ::) ::)
