Title: Water Pump leaking again
Post by: Ironingboard on 31 December 2008, 13:30:09
Changed my water pump when I done my timing belt in Feb using the quality DVD I got from here.   :y

Anyway I found recently that the back of the pump was leaking. I've just changed the pump again with a new seal. I even used a very small amount of grey sealent to make sure all was tight and sealed. I've just checked today and its leaking again.

I used new pump bolts, seal and torqued to correct values and cleaned the surface on the block to make sure all was flat, but I'm open to suggestions on what the problem might be before I have to strip it down again?

100% sure, a while back the plate covering the oil cooler was leaking coolant, so the plate and thermostat was taken out and resealed with nice grey sealant, all nice and dry.

Is it ok to use grey sealant around the water pump Mark?

Yes it is and its pretty piss poor stuff by modern standards when compared to the likes of the loctite alternatives.

I ahve to say that I have never seen a pump leak on a block to pump seal as both the block and pump have nicely machines flat faces and the rubber O ring is the perfect seal.

I assume the block face is in fine fettle?

Smooth as a babies bum, used a very fine sandpaper to clean it up and the block is solid. I'm a bit shocked it leaking again. I guess I'll have to take it apart and apply more grey sealant this time. Can anyone confirm the torque values for the bolts?

Is the pump a genuine Vauxhall one.

My mechanic tried 2 "after market" pumps and both failed, leaking water/coolant everywhere.

As soon as I insisted he used a Vauxhall pump, never had the problem again.

Strange but true ?

The one I replaced when I done my timing belt was an aftermarket one from Autovaux, that one leaked.

But the one I've just fitted is a VX one, unless VX is started supplying cheap and nasty components and hence the problems I'm having  :o
