3.2 engine where is the thermostat ? how easy is it to get to?
-
it should be right in the front third between the two banks of cylinders
you'll need to take the bottom radiator hose off (passenger side)
aswell as the entire intake and manifold gasket plastic to get to it properly!
the thermostat is at the engine end of a 8inch pipe that the radiator hose goes onto on the side of the block (the thermostat pushes into the end of the pipe and is held in by two small lugs that you need to push the thermostat inwards and turn like a flat bar and then it'll just come straight out)

been trying to find you a picture or a link....
Thermostat is under the inlet manifold, right infront of the oil cooler plate.
If I find a picture I will add it on here

lol it might be worth you buying the courtenaysport low running thermostat, opens up earlier so it keeps the engine cooler- doesnt really matter till you hammer it alot

Why, there's nothing wrong with the existing cooling system so long as its in good working order.
-
the trouble i am having is, the gauge does not move off the
bottom when traveling at normal speed be it aroad/motorway
only moves when idle (thermo)?

sorry EP just that from my experience of the 2.0 trying to keep up with the octavia vrs and failing rather badly it got quite hot so needed to be driven hard with the heater on! and the V6's run hotter and apparently were prone to overheating when towing (or hammering in my case)

When the thermostat fails it fails in the open position so it sounds like yours need replacing.

Then I would suggest the cooling system was in a poor condition.

Sounds likely. Start your car from cold and keep an eye on the temp of the rad hoses. If your stat is OK then your hoses should stay cold & hen get hot in a fairly short time ie when your sta opens. If the hoses gradually get warm/hot then your stat is fubar'd or missing! :-? :y :y :y

The only possible explanation was that the old stat wouldn't open fully for some reason.

well the temp was fine until it came to the summer and i was hammering it coming off slower roads and stuff, it was fine at 60 when it was getting more air however much abuse it was given

Towing over the moors in Devon and Cornwall in the summer - NO problems with heat at all

Did it have aircon - air con V6 three fans, 2.0 two fans
-
Last summer my V6 towed a 1600 Kg 'van all the way to Millau (South of France) and up some 3000 ft mountains without overheating at all, and I tow very regularly in the UK, so to say they can't tow without overheating is b****cks !!

...... so to say they can't tow without overheating is b****cks !!
But as said earlier, the cooling sysytem does need to be right. My car had no apparent overheating problems till I put a caravan on the back, the temp went to the top of the gauge on the first looong uphill it came to. A new rad was fitted after the cleaned & flushed rad sprung a leak as far from home as it could possibly spring a leak! ;) :y :y :y

my 2.0 only had the single fan

entwood... i got told it off somebody who's never owned an omega and secondly somebody else that is female

The 3.0 runs at 90 degrees alex, about the same or less than the 2.0...and with much more power and torque it pulls the weight easier too...my 2.5 ran at about 92 degrees and and fans cut in at 95...

All Omegas shoudl cruise just under mid point on the gauge (so 93/94 on prefacelifts, 88/89 on facelifts), rising to just over midpoint before stage 1 fans kick in

i got told that towing they overheat but that was coming from somebody with a 2.5 diesel turbo mercedes that used to get rather hot towing

Don't believe everything that some uninformed person down the pub says ;)

Omegas do not suffer overheating if the cooling system is working properly

Sparky, the thermostat really isn't a hard job to do yourself honestly. With the help from the Forum you will save yourself alot of money :y

I caught up so they doubled their stars ;D

lol omg 12000+ posts!

I think a lot of people get confuesed and assume a car is overheating the second the radiator fan kicks in! Which on the V6 lumps is fairly quickly.
My gran did anyway last summer when I was doing something with her fiesta... It was sat ticking over in the garage for a while, and as she came in to see whats happening the fan came on, and she was flapping about saying 'its overheating turn it off quickly' :P
-
Well just to let you all know from experiance the omega does not overheat when towing a caravan. My 3.0ltr has had a problem with the thermostat not working and in the summer of this year (2008) the temp needle went upto the highest point before the red and the fans cooled the rad down no problem.
Anyway there is a how to on replacing the termostat on the V6 which I wrote out and which is waiting to go into the howto section, (when admin sort it out :) ) but here is the link:
http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1229464811
Follow it with ease. Now I replaced my thermostat myself with no help and it was a doddle, so if I can do it you can too.
