Firstly good evening all and i hope you had a great Christmas. I have just put the miggy through it's MOT and after picking it up from a mates house who assisted me i noticed that the temp gague was not moving, i looked through the computer display and noticed it was apparently 6 degrees outside. The aircon doesn't seem to be working properly either. I was wondering if the MOT station might've knocked something i.e. a wire or is it the thermostat thats gone. I just don't believe in coincidence. The car is a 2.6 on a 52 plate before you all ask. Cheers in advance and i hope you all have a great 2009.

Dont most cars stop aircon working if outside temp is below 8deg?
-
4deg on the Omega.
-
Sorry should have read 68 degrees and it was about -3 outside today.
-
Sounds like your outside temp sensor has become dislodged and is probably touching the radiator. On a facelift it's clipped into the lower grill in the centre of the bumper.... well at least it should be!
-
Thanks for that suggestion, do you think that would make the brain of the car thinks it is very hot outside and therefore keep the engine running cold?
-
cold running will be stat
-
The aircon will blow really hot or be cold but nothing in between. The gague has only not been working since MOT so i thought it might be linked. Do you think the the Stat has gone? and if so could you tell me where it is and how easy to change etc.

On v6 thermostat is under the plenum/fuel injectors/lower divider

Right here we go, i have changed the outside temp sensor and this has cured the temp reading and also this has sorted the climate control out. The engine temp is still not moving though. I ran the car this morning and all the pipes seemed to be running at the same temperature and the fans also cut in and out as they should. I know the answer but i'm assuming that this would only leave the stat? If anyone has pictures of where it is and also pictures of what i need to remove i would be grateful. Thanks again for the help. >:(

The gauge is fed from a diffent sensor right at the back of the engine. You'll find 2 of them, one has just one terminal - this talks to the gauge & one with a blue/grey plug and has 2 terminals - this talks to the engine ECU. If your fans are running as they should ie switching on & off I would think that either the wire has come off the sender or your gauge is fubar'd. To test the gauge, ground wire that goes/should go to the sender, and if the guage is OK then it will read all the way to HOT if it doesn't then it could be the sender, or the dash not properly seated - not making a proper connection on the multipin plug behind it.

any ideas where the outside temp sensor is on a mini/pre-facelift (don't know which ne mine is lol) cos the temp is way off, reading 35c earlier when it was blooming cold lol.
many thanks

Andy,
thanks for the info. I had a look and one of the plugs appeared to have come detached. Not sure if it was knocked when they did the MOT or not. All working well now. Once again cheers for all the advice.

Good! I wonder what they were looking for to knock the wire off? :-?

Bottom edge of the front bumper, towards the passenger side. They're only around £6 for a new sensor.
Mini face lift has radio controls on the steering wheel, solid head restraints, fog lights telltales on the dash rather than the switch itself ......... and other things ;) :y
