Title: I promise Ive searched!!!!
Post by: jayhallam on 01 January 2009, 20:18:16
But I cant come up with what I need info on!
I have a 98 s 2.5 elite auto. When I start the car from cold the engine ticks very loudly kind of like a clock. However once it has warmed up after a min or two the ticking stops and the engine sound normal.
Anyone have any idea as to what is causing this?

Blown exhaust manifold/gasket?  Sticking tappet?  Drive belt breaking up?  I'm guessing its engine speed related?

From what very little I know about cars I was thinking exhaust manifold gasket blown but have absolutly no idea how to check or how much it would cost to get repaired/ how easy it is to do

Do a search on exhaust manifold gasket.... sounds like the classic symptoms ...

Watched one being changed at the Lakes last year, took MarkDTM a stupidly short time .... in comparison to what it would have taken me !!

Gasket or hydraulic lifter.  Both need a wee bit heat to give some expansion to take up the slack/get oil pressure up.  Not the most serious of things, more a nag on your nerves if unfixed....

Thanks for the info.I dont think its the kind of thing that I would be able to do on my own so Ill see how much a garage is going to charge.

Stick your location in your profile .. and give JamesV6CDX a PM ... he does Omega work at a far higher standard than any garage.. and if within range will probably be a lot cheaper !!!

Agreed exhaust manifold gasket or hydraulic lifter.  Had the same on the saloon - it was a lifter - 2 x quick oil/filter changes cured. :y

I would suggest a couple of oil changes like dbug has said, sounds to me also like a exhaust manifold gasket blowing. My own car does it slightly only when cold, on the drivers side which I am putting off until it gets warmer. The gaskets are around £10 to buy, but a bit of a tricky job to do. I worked with a guy who had his done at his local garage (not VX) they charged him £80.
