Title: Self Servicing
Post by: CDX on 05 January 2009, 14:41:37
Hi Considering cutting costs by carrying out basic serviving on my 2.6 V6 myself ie plugs filters etc. The last vehicle I worked on was a 1.3 escort.

In your opinion is this a task that I should consider or should I just leave it to my local vauxhall dealer?

No reason not to DIY, most service jobs are easy enough :y

All routine maintenance tasks are straightforward although the packaging on the V6 engine means some things like plugs are less easy to access. Have a look at the maintenance guides here, arm yourself with some torx sockets and give yourself plenty of time the first time round and you'll be OK.

If you have done servicing before there is absolutely no reason why you shouldn't do it yourself on the V6. 8-) 8-) 8-)

Just use the wonderful Guides and general advice available at all times on this site.  There is ALWAYS somebody who will know the answer to any question you have! :D :D ;)

Support is always there when and if you need it. :y :y

Thanks for that. I'll give it  go should save a few pennies.  One other question I recently bought the vehicle and after reading on hear about the timing belts etc the dealer confirmed that it was changed at 40k the vehicle has now done 66k ther's no paperwork to back this up. Is there away to check if the work has been done or not?

 :)

No reason why not and most common tasks are covered in the guides.

It took me ages to get around to removing the plenum (big flat aluminium thing on top..) but its really just a lot of connections to be undone..

Its also worth getting hold of a low end torque wrench - a lot of the plenum bolts are 8nm.

Good luck
Ian

Ask them for a print out of the work they have carried out on the car.  :y

not unless you  know where the car has had every service.

best bet is to get it done asap.

there are cambelt meets planned twice yearly but i wouldnt recommend waiting.
