Title: squealing noise when first start car
Post by: EGGY2 on 06 January 2009, 20:34:23
can someone please help, every morning when i first start my car theres a terible squealing noise coming from below the bonnet sounds like the aux belt is slipping, lasts for about 2 or 3 mins, in the last 6 months ive put on a new aux belt and tensioner.in the last couple of weeks it seems to be getting worse. was sitting in the car this morning with my parking lights on and as soon as i put on full lights it started to squeal, was wondering could it be my power steering pump or could it be the alternator on the way out?? any sugguestions please this is really getting to me cheers and thanks

it is coming from your alternator - you proved that when you mentioned the increased noise when you put headlamps on - try tightening the drive belt.

..... - try tightening the drive belt.

It's on an auto tensioner. ;)

Probably a fubar'd bearing.

i thought it was the alternator, maybe the bearing was going so i took it to the garage last week and they said the alternator bearing was fine, also when i drive through puddles it squeals.. wheres the drive belt sorry for being a bit slow..

An auxillary drive belt is wha we always used to call a fan belt. The belt right at the front of the engine. The tensioner is top left as you stand in font of the car.

i had this problem on my aux belt on a yaris, was very annoying.
toyota said to put some grease on (apparently it was the pulleys and corrosion or something) so gets dry and squeeks

You say you've put on a new belt and tensioner, did you fit it or did some one else? (or supposedly) The reason I ask is that it's been known for grease in the tensioner pulley bearing to dry out resulting in it making squealing noises. Ultimately the bearing can seize and the pulley wheel break up. Just Asking!  :y
