Recently acquired 1995 2-litre auto. Sometimes on turning the ignition an orange warning light, looking like the engine block, flashes and continues to flash. On these occasions the engine does not start. Other times the light extinguishes along with the others and the car starts first time. Guidance please fellas?

That continuous flashing indicates an immobilsor fault. As it works on other occassions it may well be the "chip" in your key is loose and moves about whilst in your pocket or similar. Dismantle the key and check the tiny square chip is secure and in the right place .. use a drop of superglue to refix if loose.

Dismantled both keys, they have no chips inside them. This is clearly not the problem itself otherwise the ccar would never start. PS car is NOT remote central locking

Trust me, there is...it looks just like a bit of seperate plastic. Could be the aerial loop in the steering column shroud though, or even a slightly intermittant conection.
Mine does it occasionally; a flashing light is an immobiliser fault and most of the time its a loose chip - although could also be somethig not quite right with the wiring.

Central locking and engine immobiliser are 2 totally different and seperate beasts ....
AFAIK all miggys have the immobiliser fitted as standard.... but I might be wrong ....

must be an immobiliser on the car, or the light would not flash, if the car starts, must be a chip in the key. Is car a gls? Are they Vx keys? Or has a previous owner lost them/ had cheap copies made? The chip is tiny, 2 by 2 by 7mill ish.
