hi i just bought the car a month ago i dnt remember if the guy i bought it frm actually changed the cam belt.so now wot it has done 87k.
-
4 years or 40.000 miles. change belt and tensioners, which ever comes first.
-
If you cant find out when it was last done then you can only assume it needs doing. You can check at vauxhall using the reg off your car, but that's only if they did it. A new cambelt is not expensive compared to a new engine.
-
..basically as other people have said...
if you cant guarantee its been done then prepare to pay around 200-300 pounds to have it changed and make sure its the full kit and change the water pump as it's alot easier while your there
if you wanted to go to the trouble you could take the timing belt cover off and inspect the belt and pulleys but unless it looked practically new then you'd just prove it was due
it's alot easier and cheaper to change the belt than it is to repair/change an engine (sorry to "drill" that message home but it's true)

Lost cambelts on previous cars so now I have mine changed every 40,000 without fail. Definately worth the investment. Please don't risk it if unsure of when it was last changed get it done. Do water pump at same time.
-
Don't risk it !!!! :y :y
-
if in doubt get it done mate ...
as said lt cheaper than and less stressfull than the belt snapping ... :y
-
mines due for a change sometime soon, any volunteers to help/guide me? (this will be my foirst cambelt change!)
-
Look out for a cambelt meet (in the Meetings section) - there will be plenty of help/tools available there. I'm not sure if the one that was being discussed got confirmed.
-
I think the main problem is having somewhere to do them, the last one we had there was about 30 Omegas turn up and doing a cambelt or any other sort of work in the winter isn't much fun :(
-
I can vouch for that - did mine at the weekend. Tootsies have only just warmed up again..
-
if you dontknow when it was done matey, DO IT........otherwise, wait for funny noise, lack of power and yer dash lights comin on - then you KNOW it needs changin :o :o seriously mate, if you dont know, its SO worth gettin it changed as soon as.................and change full cambelt kit :y :y

i was te same and could not confirm when the belt was changed, so i got it done for peace of mind sake, rather spend 150.00 on that than have to scrap the car cos i ignored the advice on here

also it sometimes cheaper to supply your own kit, dont get it from VH, buy a "gates kit", no other, from ebay, gates supply vh with theirs. so you are buying a vh approved kit basically.

Or Contitech.....who also supply Vx and are as good (and in the case of the belt) sometimes superior ot the Gates ones.
