Hi folks
Read a recent post today frm seanboy40.....
I have a similar problem, my car will select reverse ok but when i select drive or even 1 2 3 no movement at all. Now not even the very slight thump (as you would expect) to let you know that your engaged in gear.....
Any suggestions :( :(

Thanx forthe very quick response, but had the oil and filter changed bout 4 wks ago with o.e. filter and gasket and dexron III recommended atf. Now i'm not a mechanic but would might be what you would call "novic mechanically minded", i helped change the oil and filter and i dont think it was ever done (149k). Had a lot of wrk cleaning out the sump and had a bit of bother finding the little magnet....

Now this might sound daft .. but was the level filled CORRECTLY ... on the miggy it is done with the engine running, or you end up with a very low level, which might be your problem ...not enough fluid in the system.
My first thought would be to have the level checked, ensuring the vehicle is level, and the engine is running.

i had a bit too much in mine when i checked it last month, took a bit out and the gear changes are very good now, very smooth when the engines hot and a brilliant kick when i boot it at 70 :-X

Thanx for your reply, we filled the sump up to the bung level then raised the sump up to box then tightened. I then took it for a short run ( to reach op temp) then rechecked oil level and topped up accordingly so............ not sure wot to do now mate???

get it to opearting temp and check level again on a level ! you might find its dropped a good bit ! do you know how much oil you put in ?? :-?

Well, is the bung the rite level or is their something i'm missing. When car is running i loosen the bung and a little oil comes out.......

okay ... if you filled it correctly 4 weeks ago; car level, engine running just to the "bung" level ...... and now when you put the car to the same conditions and remove the bung fluid comes out, then you probably have a fairly serious box problem.
The reason I say this, is AFAIK, as ATF fluid breaks down through excess heat or stress, which can include excess slippage or "burning" at the fluid clutches, the polymers actually get longer, so giving the impression of an overfull system.
I mean .. if it was correctly filled, where has the "extra" fluid come from to dribble out ?
I hope I'm wrong for your sake ... but an expert will pass by and correct me soon I expect ...

I think i will take your advise and recheck the oil level again....

p.s. Just a quick question,
It'll select reverse ok but just no action in any forward gears, i had someone mention to me bout a selector switch???
Any ideas or i'm i grasping straws ::)

Not too hot on the selector switch side of things .. but AFAIK all the valves are electrically operated from the ECU...
If memory serves me.. and it probably doesn't... a feature of low oil level is that reverse works when forwards doesn't, .... I think that reverse has a shorter internal path so requires less fluid to work.
I'm concerned that you filled the sump before refitting and then drove the car without checking the level. You may just be well short of fluid, or you've damaged something. 1 gall (4.5 ltrs) does not seem anywhere near enough fluid IMHO

Definatley gonna get the oil level checked again an would be a really happy man but not gonna get my hopes up.......
Will prob do to the wkend but i'll come back and let you know.

I'll give you all a BIG clue to the issue - the OPs profile suggests its a 2.5TD auto, and in the posts, suggests its done 149k.....

Yeah, theres a lot of miles on it, but did a lot of work to the old girl. Engines like new, clean, I'm sure theres a bit left on her yet :-/

I think TB is implieing the gearbox is FUBAR ... due to the amount of work it has done ... but a quick check of fluid levels MAY, just MAY, save you a boxchange .... if you're lucky .. :y :y :y

That sound like pretty good going for a TD AR25! About 50k over the norm..

The car itself will be fine, just the gearbox is simply worn out. A replacement gearbox from a scrapper should sort her out, and they are not technically difficult to change (just heavy and awkward).
If you are not chipping your diesel, an AR25 off a low mileage 2.0/2.5/2.6 will sort it (need to reuse your old bellhousing and torque convertor), if you are planning on chipping it, you need an AR35 from a 3.0/3.2

personally i would opt for an AR35 box if replacement is needed whether chipping or otherwise, you may find a lowish mileage AR25 but its in the lap of the gods as to how its been treated or serviced etc, at least an AR35 should be stronger & a better chance of it being a good`n,,,,best of luck with it :y

AR35 feels as if its higher geared...

You mean the smell of burning fluid, or the burning of clutches?
If the fluid is a) low and b) black (or dark brown) then the gearbox has burnt out...
