Title: Cam Belt Change
Post by: ScottieMV6 on 11 January 2009, 17:10:44
Ok. So I have now got to the point where I am ready to rotate the engine, however the belt looks extremely slack on the upper idler.

Is this ok?? Don't want to rotate without checking. :y

Arrow in 12 o'clock position as per dvd.

Bit dark for a pic but I can take one tomorrow.

try turning it anticclockwise a bit until it takes up the slack...

doesn't sound right to me.  when you rotate, that slack will be taken up by the adjuster.  If there is loads, the adjuster will back off and the belt will jump.  You should actually have a pretty taught belt because you should have roatated the upper idler to align 1/2 with the timing guage.  Can you take the slack up with the adjuster?  if not then it sounds like you are a tooth out

There is a little slack between 1-2 and 3-4 bank.....when rotating the crank this will be very quickly taken up.....

If you get to much belt between the banks then you wont get the tensioner fitted and tensioned assuming the belt was put on with the cam locks fitted

The belt was fitted with cam locks in place.

I couldn't get the lower idler in once I had routed the belt so removed the upper idler, removed the belt from cams 3 and 4 while I got the lower idler in, then refitted the belt around 3 and 4 and then put the upper idler back.

Could this have affected it? I didn't see how as you have to set the upper idler to the 12 o'clock position afterwards anyway!

Ok here is the photo I have just taken. Hopefully you can make out the amount of slack. I can move the upper idler by hand very easily.

Ok....set the tensioner (set it high) and crank it voer, I suspect it will then adjust up fine!

It certainly wont damage anything.

Tensioner already set to the upper edge as advised in the DVD. Do I set it higher than that or should I rotate as it is?

In this case, set it 5mm higher.

I suspect that the slack is about half a tooths worth and is to be expected with the idlers in the pre-set state

Ok sorry for all the questions but I don't want to mess this up.

Once I have rotated and set the timing should I then set the tensioner back to the upper edge?

Yes.

What we are doing is ensuring the tensioner can take up the excess slack for this initial stage  :y

Ok adjusted the tensioner as described and when I went to rotate 3 and 4 moved but 1 and 2 didn't move.

Did the belt slip or what? or did you only move it a fraction?

I only moved it a fraction. The belt seems to be still lined up with all the markings so don't know if it has slipped or not.

Probably ok then. It won't move 1-2 until it goes tight around the top idler.  Just go steady and watch what's happening.

But then won't the timing be out?

Sorry first time doing a cam belt and I really can't afford to mess my engine up!!

only by the 1/2 tooth per Mark, which you can then adjust out with the idler after you have rotated it.

Thanks for the help and advice. Loo-Knee and Elite Pete called earlier and sorted it out. :y

What was the problem btw?  Could be useful for people reading this in future.

Cheers

Think I had fitted the belt a bit wrong and then it had slipped.

The guys had to start again from scratch.

Just glad it is sorted!! :y
