Title: cam seal and head gasket gone....difficult?

cam seal gasket 's needed doin for a cpl of mnths but the other morning whilst coming home from work there was a smokescreen behind me for a while..followed by the heater ' blowing cold air whilst on hot' and the temp gauge going into the red..until i eased off the throttle when i returned to normal and then back up(about 5miles home) anyways..all water had gone...expansion take smelled of petrol...now...is it a major job im looking at here...ive a friend who's a bit of a petrol head and keen to give it a go..anything special im gonna need?...besides the gaskets and head bolts?..he says maybe waped head?...costly?....anybody?...thanks..

unless your friend is very much ok with doing this job forget it the head is aluminium so a skim is a must best left to a proper mech costs between £350 - £500 sorry :( :(

2.0 engine is easy enough......and I would not skim a head by default, measure it first.

A skim would be abour 25-30 quid if needed.

Parts would be up to 200 quid depending if the cambelt needs renewing at the same time

thanks chaps...also forgot to say...cam belt changed 6-7 months ago

 manifold studs a pain, shear/unscrew....
