Hi Guys and Gals
Normally, my geabox behaves perfectly. Initially engages both forward and reverse, changes gear when it should, drops into OD, sports mode works well ;D and slow snow mode works well ;).
Twice now in the last two weeks it has decided to play up in the following way:
Travelling at less than 35 mph (2nd gear?) the car jerks a little, the dash gives me the "Automatic Gearbox" warning and the car looses its pulling power (thats the car not me :)). It also will not let me use sports or snow modes after this fault.
I pull over, stop the engine, restart and all is well. No warnings and all the power back. Sport and snow modes back online so to speak.
I have done the paperclip check and no faults are reported.
FYI I have not as yet changed the fluid.
Any thoughts on this ?? ;)

changing the fluid and filter wouldnt hurt, they are meant to be maintenance free, but who are they kidding, nothing is maintenance free.
I think you need to get the gearbox ecu read by tech 2, it wont show on the paperclip test as thats the engine ecu codes.
check your fluid level and see what kind of colour it is before you do anything. :y

Do a fluid change on the box. If that doesn't cure it, check the selector switch, if that appears OK, need to get gearbox codes read

Have been out (school run) and run some tests.
20mph, accelerate so car kicks down, 35 - 40 mph, lay off throttle.
Car makes a loud noise (bang) and I can feel it through the floorpan. No faults though.
Continues driving normally.............................. :-?

Check ATF fluid level before driving any further!! :y

Well, what an awful job. The worst yet ;D
Got the fluid out, it was brown and stunk.
Cleaned out the sumps. The fluid residue was utterly filthy.
The magnet was full and the rest was in suspension in the fluid.
There were no pieces of metal (thrust washer ?) in the pan.
Have got the box to the first fill point before running engine to top up.
I used a 1ltr bottle (inverted with the bottom cut off) taped to my trolley jack handle feeding the sump via a nice long peice of tube. Like a drip, slow but sure.
Will finish tomorrow morning and let you know how she drives. :y :y

as a guide, they say consider changeing after 60k mine played up at 70 and old 2.5 at 80k. some go much longer tho, thumping or banging when selecting/changeing gear is first sign in my experience.
ill guess...over 80k...?
personally if its banging i would keep use to a minimum until the fluid is changed... ;)

lol i wouldnt use it at all till the fluids changed really, it might be at around 140k chris and be dying :P

125,000 miles.
So is it a fact that these boxes die after such a low mileage. :o My last motor hit 200,000 and didn't show any signs of failing. Very poor >:(

I don't think anyone is saying they can't do 200K, but the ATF just needs changing every 60K to get there. Much like the engine oil needs changing every 10K...
Also, 2.5 has a much weaker Autobox than the 3.0 and is therefore more sensitive to neglect fluid changes.

It was fine. I got it at 110,000 and changed it then and again at 150,000. The first lot made me vomit ;D ;D
The miggy box is just being topped up with the engine running. I will soon be scrabbling about on my back again with that old sump plug :y :y

Took the old girl for a test run this morning.
She is seems to be putting much more power out and changing gear smoother. Didn't realise it was so bad ::)
The clunking seems to have gone also but I will keep my eye on it. :-X
