Title: 2.5 TD Glowplugs.
Post by: osealy on 06 January 2009, 12:14:15
Woudn't start the other day. I pulled the connector. I have 3 failed plugs.
Anyone know which pin matches which cylinder.

Some are easier to change than others.

Last time I couldn't get the manifold off the studs.
Thanks

do you mean which pin from the wiring goes to each glowplug??

afaik they all just wire up the same - there is no specific order with the wiring

I changed mine with the inlet still in place - had a few bad ones but changed them all for peace of mind.

Change all of them & avoid the cheap ones on e-bay
Beru are the OEM manufacturer circa £11 ea
Wired in parallel so any lead to any plug

And I had already ordered some ebay ones . Wellman 20£

They are individually wired from glow plug to glow plug relay, where they are all joined in parallel, if that makes sense.

I have 5 out of 6 faulty glow plugs, but can't face changing them in this weather ::)

I'm surprised you can start at all with 5 down. I had to crank for ages this pm 2Deg.
Do you know which pin is which plug. I'm hoping the dead ones are the easier. I also don't fancy changing 6 in this weather.

get them all changed, you know you want to :P
saves time in the long run anyway as you'll have changed them all so none should go any time soon ;)

Once one goes the rest soon follow in sympathy!

The pin order is 123789 so now I need to find which are dead. I think 3 is the easiest to get at.

It's obviously that time of year. -3 deg when I left work this evening and the tractor just wouldn't start. I'm sure it's the glowplugs.
Anyone done this job? They appear to be very difficult to get at with a manifold above them. Do I need to remove this?

It's very awkward especially if they break. & see plattys post.

£7.05 plus VAT from GSF - and they normally supply Beru..BTW that's for an E34 BMW 525tds

Yep - inlet manifold needs to come off .... !

Once it's removed, stuff some rags in the inlet ports on the cylinder head to prevent any foreign bodies entering the combustion chambers while your changing the plugs.

Change the lot chaps, and definately avoid the cheapo ones.
Remember, quality doesn't cost - it pays!

It's presently minus 5 degrees here in The Valleys.
The tractor burst into life first go ... !

I changed my plugs last weekend for the Wellman plugs purchased off EBAY "bought them prior to getting the advice not to" they have gone in ok and are working great even in the bad weather we have been having. I take it you have undone the bracket underneath the manifold also the connection to the turbo piping the inlet manifold should just wiggle off.  I cannot see how it is possible to get to all these plugs without removing the manifold, what i would have to hand is an extendable magnet because i guarantee something will drop to a place where you cannot not reach it. I would allow a day to get the job done take your time and you will be ok. :D

Looks like pins 123789 are 1-6 from back to front, I'm missing 238 so I might leave the manifold.#
The wellman plugs not arrived yet. What's the problems with them?

They will not last as long as a reputable brand. Beru are OEM
Given the difficulty in fitting them I'm sure that you do not want to do it again for as long as possible

When I used to go there to play I had a fiat 124 sport, They decided that anything under 2l would be £20 road tax. Even saw a ford galaxie advertised with 2l engine ;D

Managed to get the tractor going yesterday. Very reluctant and a serious cloud of smoke to begin with following a long turnover. However, fine once she heated up.
I've ordered the glowplugs and inlet manifold gaskets.
Anybody know the torques for the plugs and manifold bolts on reassembly?
Cheers. :-?

Who'd have believed changing the glow plugs could be so much hassle! Bought 6 off ebay before I started reading this post. They sent me 4! Still, thought I'd get started. Getting the manifold off is a pig. Not enough room with the bulkhead getting in the way. Had to chop off a little screw holding some of the soundproofing in order to get it off. Getting the plugs out is then hampered by the number of pipes in the way. You need nimble fingers, not easy in this weather. So here I am with 4 plugs renewed awaiting the postman for the other 2. Only good thing is that 3 of the 4 I have so far removed were dead, so this work needed to be done. Think I'll renew the leakoff pipes and any others looking tired while the access is reasonable.
For the non mechanics out there allow a day to do this job. Don't know how it is possible to do it without removing the inlet manifold, simply not enough access room. :(

As the inlet manifold comes off so easily, not worth the effort in trying to do it in place...

So It took me 1Hr 50m .     Hylomar for gaskets, Nailbar to get manifold off, same to get it back on. Makes changing plugs a doddle.

And I'm sure it will be half that if you have to whip inlet off again :y

Balance of the plugs arrived yesterday and I installed under candlelight. I can only think that some cars have more room to get the manifold off and on again, because I found it a right pain. However, car started on the button...What a relief! 8-)

Strange thing. Set off the day after new glowplug install. 1/4 mile down the road car starts running ropey 3-4 cylinders only I would imagine, lots of smoke..oops. What have I done wrong? Stopped car and checked for any pipes not reconnected under candlelight but no obvious problem. Decided to try limping home but car started on the button and has been running fine since. Obviously a glitch with the pump? Anyone any thoughts? :-/

No, they are all the same. The inlet just lifts cleaning and squarely off - there is room.  If you tilt, it catches baukhead

Just been out and done mine at lunchtime. 50mins from start to finish.  Could have done quicker by removing top hose, as no1 was a bit of a sod to get the deep socket on.

Started on the first turn of key. Though airbag light stayed on for 20s, a sure sign the battery is pretty flat, so chucked it on charge.

Mine did that too. It started fine then ran crap with smoke for a few mins then fine again. Done 600mls since, perfect.

I still dont think I would have managed without the nailbar.
