Title: battery warning light
Post by: jerry on 15 January 2009, 21:17:23
Have only just got home from work and for the last half mile the battery warning light came on, I lost the power steering and the temp guage shot up to max so I assume this is because the cooling system packed up too. Ive only recently had a new oil cooler fittted and also a new battery, could it be anything to do with these or is it just the alternator thats gone and if so how much am I looking at for one of those?(they say things come in 3s dont they :(!).I also assume that if it is the alternator this would be the cause of the failure of the cooling system and power steering?

I assume its a V6.....in whcih case it wont have been driving the water pump either!

Did you drive it far?

No,
unfortunately it went where it really wasnt safe to pull over so I probably drove it (really quite slowly) half a mile if that. Didnt hear any nasty noises and, once itd stood for a bit and cooled down I turned it over and again no nasty noises just the warning light on and no power steering or cooling. The cambelt was only done just under a year ago when I purchased the car so hopefully no damage there but havent had a proper look under the bonnet yet.

the battery light should come on for example if the alternator isnt charging (aux belt) ...just thought i'd try n explain why you'd got the battery light on

after you get the new aux belt fitted, keep a very close eye on the water level and check what the oil looks like, if you cooked it for too long then.... well it aint turky so wont be chewy.. :D

Check the tensioner pulley has not seized at the same time.

Cheers guys,
Turned out to be a broken tension arm so new belt and tension kit fitted-and coolant topped up again too. All sorted now-just hope theres nothing else to go wrong now that the mot is round the corner!!
