might be worth having a look through previous posts as there have been several discussions on the subject.

The impression I've got is that it's best to use genuine VX oil and change every 4k ish

Hope this helps :y

Yes 10w40 is the correct oil to use. Depending on the sort of mileage you do most people on here tend to change the oil roughly every 4kish or you can change it once a month if doing short journey's i.e 2-3 mile aday to and from work. You can use oil from a factor if you want as they are to manafacture spec so using that oil is fine.

I'm doing on average 7K a year made up of mostly 200 mile drives with the occasional short journey. Would you recommend I be changing the oil more often than the 4k?

 :)

No IMHO, 4 000 is frequent enough.

MV6 gets 5.5l of Vauxhall Semi Synth every 3-4k.  If your oil is in a bad way, consider doing a couple of 500m oil changes.

Tractors need it a bit more often, mine gets 6.5l of fresh Vauxhall Semi Synth every 3k maximum, or even more often if it decides to throw it all out everywhere...

I've seen a couple of links on here but are oil changes fairly easy to carry out?

Yes.  Unless a previous garage has done your 2.6 oil filter housing up too tight!

If the filter housing is tight you can undo it with a 3/8 square drive, it's not as likely to slip off as a spanner which means than the skin on your knuckles will remain intact  ;)

That can cause the cap to split.
