Title: Gearbox stuck in 3rd
Post by: Paul2.2 on 11 January 2009, 13:28:10
I think that the ice switch is stuck in the on position cause the car is pulling off and staying in 3rd. Changing thro the gears manually at the moment and pressing the sport button doesn't do anything. Is there a simple way to sort this?

did i read somewhere that ice mode resets automatically after a certain speed is exceeded? 60 comes to mind but not sure.
Is the switch illuminated? As it should be when selected.

the snow mode switch puts the car into 2nd not 3rd from memory.

if its deffinately 3rd you are in then its not the snow switch.

does the car go into 1st and second when you select the gears manually?

according to the handbook the snow switch starts the car in 3rd. The switch is illuminated but no reset happened over 60. Only took it up to 70mph as didn't want to exceed speed limit  ;)

If the sport light doesn`t illuminate on dash it will be the selector switch on gearbox playing up. Sounds like gearbox is in limp mode. :y

Any problems with the lights on the gear lever  :question

Battery disconnect hasn't done the trick. The gear lever lights look on except the snow switch is always on. Looks like a trip to the local auto gearbox specialist tomorrow

Do the selector lights illuminate as per each gear or do they illuminate erratically. Wiggle the gear lever with ign. on see if they all light up. :y

All selector lights illuminate per gear. I wiggled the lever but all selector lights behaved normally.

pop the switch out and disconnect it, in the off chance its faulty.

you may need to check to see if the gearbox ecu is throwing any codes out if not

Can't really do that in my area on Sunday PM. V quiet neighbourhood! Thanks for your advice though will try tomorrow. Will get gearbox ecu checked out and go from there.

Pop the gaiter out from around the gear shifter.....follow the wires from the snow button to the connector (its just behind the opening where the gaiter fits).

Disconnect the connector and see if that fixes it!

I'm with RobG. If it was as simple as the snow switch being stuck on then you'd be able to knock it off by accelerating hard for a few seconds or driving above 60 mph(?)
Gearbox is in limp mode hence only 3 gears instead of 4  :y

Sounds like limp to me.  Not sure why its not displaying on MID though, unless that has a duff config.

Is the Snow button bright, or dim?

good point, snow mode will be lit to same level as other dash lights when the lights are on, but when snow mode is selected it will be brighter and whiter iirc than normal. I would get the switch out, as said, and check its not stuck in it on position, may be some crap down the side of it or just faulty.

If you eliminate the switch, Could be in limp mode, in which case check level of/change atf. But if limp mode would have thought the car would tell you via the display...? Hth

I would have thought that if the box is locked in third surely you wouldn`t be able to manually select any other gear :-/

Thanks for all advice last week - been unable to get back on forum till now. Anyway the engine light came on on Monday and someone I know took a read from the ecu and told me it was running lean so probably in limp mode. I recently had a new timing belt fitted - could the timing be out? Also there is a crack in the manifold that I've been meaning to get sorted for ages - could this be the source of the fault?

Come to conclusion need to get it checked by an expert - any recommendations in Leicester area?
