hi chaps got a rubbing grating noise from front drivers side on my 2.6 omega 2002 think its the wheel bearing ,nothing coming through the steering, drives fine, no noticable tyre wear just this noise. any idears, cost and who wants the job cheers deano. :-/

have you checked the back plate for the disc? usually they rub the disc causing a noise like you describe, what makes me thing this is that you say its not being felt through the steering wheel.

Get the offending wheel in the air and check for play at 3 and 9 oclock and 6 and 12 oclock then get someone to put their foot on the brake and see if any play dissapears.

yes done all the usual checks back plate, brakes ie pads,disc, and any signs of things being lose but all seems fine

But did you do the check as suggested by EP?

Thats how wheel bearing play is diagnosed, when you redo the 3/9 and 6/12 checks with the footbrake applied.......
If you did not do this then you are simply guessing as to the cause of your drivers side noise..... ;)

inside edge of tire rubbing on the strut when the suspension is loaded? Camber has to be miles out though has it had a bump/kerbed? See if you can see rub marks on the strut.... Maybe?

yes done petes check justs a small end float movement thats all ,wheel not close to any strutt or springs, tyre shows no sign of rubbing.

Does the movement dissappear or reduce with the footbrake applied or is it the same?

i think i will change the hole hub to eliminate this area ,they are cheep on ebay, evern new ones .

If there is no discernable difference in movement with the brake off and on, then its not the wheel bearing and you will be wasting money.
Look elsewhere...... ;)

er, as Mr 21 says, you just checked it and reported its fine. So why change it?
When did the noise start? Any work been done in that area? Or did it come in gradually or all of a sudden? Noises are a bugger to describe tbh.
Drop links? Tend to rattle over bumps more than make rubbing noises. I take it its road speed related not engine speed related. Any chance its coming from the rear?

i have checked all 4 wheels and to be honest every things fine its deffo coming from the front, my experiance with bearings tells me it could be on the way out i had the same symptons with a volvo i once had and a bearing change sorted it out , i will change the hole hub and let you all no if there is a differance thanks for you help lads.

Drive the car with the radio off.
Listen to the road noise and get a good feel for what you hear when travelling straight ahead on a good flat road at a steady speed.
When you take a longish steady left hand bend the weight of the car will be on the right hand side. If a bearing was duff on that side, theres a good chance 'the noise' will increase in volume or become more noticable.
Conversely, the weight will come off the suspension on the left side of the car and any 'noise', if present, will thus reduce, indicating a fault on a bearing on the left side.
Repeat on a right hander to see if the noise goes away as the suspension on the right side is now unloaded to an extent.
If no suitable roads, find a good flat empty supermarket or factory carpark to try it when on full lock.
Please do not throw money away on buying something, spending time fitting it, only to discover that its not that part at fault.
Better to accurately diagnose a problem than throw cash at it based on hunches or guesswork, hoping you guessed correctly and thus it will dissappear.
Ultimately, its your car, your time and your money.... :y

I have a similar slight rubbing noise (or scratching, whatever...) only when turning left and it's coming from right hand front wheel. No idea where it comes from, IIRC it only appears with winter tyres (?)... It's not a "bad" noise, just annoying, not very loud, more like "hissing"... Strange one. I've also checked "everything" and at the last MOT I even asked the inspector to check the front very carefully, nothing.
