Title: CAR GOING REAL BAD..
Post by: EGGY2 on 17 January 2009, 17:43:09
problems with car since changing the rocker cover gaskets, 1 3 5 plug wells were full of oil, soaked the oil up, replaced gaskets put all back together again car wont run right sounds as if its of a cylinder, drove the car to work the next day thinking it would maybe clear itself  but no difference still sounding rough so stripped back down again plug wells were all good, changed the spark leads, (second hand set) its all i could get at the time, i need the car, 5 3 1.. 2 6 4.. would this be right? still no difference so its either plugs or dis pack. has anybody had this problem.. cheers

I had the cam cover gaskets changed on my car a couple of years ago and it had a missfire after.  It turned out to be the dis was knackered due to the oil in the plug wells shorting out the leads, so change the dis for a NEW one and that should do the trick.

the order you show look correct for the dis but not for the cylinders.
   5   6
   3   4
   1   2
Radiator
Working from memory, which is crap, so i would get this confirmed. Someone will be along.

Ive taking the dis pack out this morning, i did think maybe i had the leads on the wrong way, but no cause the dis is numbered, you say cylinders 5 3 1.. 6 4 2?? i thought it was 4 6 2.. cheers

Is it running worse since the gaskets/plugs/leads change or the same ie: no improvement?

I think you might have found your fault!  ;)  ;)  ;)  :y  :y
Cylinders on right hand side of engine are, 2 at the front, 4 in the middle & 6 right at the back .... ie like chris showed  :y

since the car filled the 5 3 1 plug wells theres been a wee mis, so i changed the rocker covers gaskets soaked oil out of plug wells put all back together again and the mis was still there, so got second hand leads and tried them, no better if anything worse, so stripped back down again put my old leads back in car still sounds as if its of a cylinder.. would the car still start if the dis pac was not working?? chrisgixer thinks maybe my cylinders wornt on right.. 5 3 1.. 2 6 4 this is to the engine.. cheers

I would hazard a guess at the plug leads being put back on the dis pack wrong.

The DIS pack has a number against each connection, that corresponds to the engine cylinders' numbers ....  :-?  :-?  :-?  :-?

yep seen the numbers today on the dis pac, think maybe my dis pac has died.. if the dis pac stopped working would the still start??

Poss would start, although it depends on how the dis has failed, but my guess is that the dis is missing on one or more cylinders.

DIS Pack for sure. Mine was exactly the same. Misfire and oil in plug holes. Changed gaskets (breathers were clear - guess the rubber gaskets just deteriorate over time?), fitted new plugs and leads. Misfire still there. Lead on cylinder 6 was trashed, insulation holed badly. New DIS pack sorted misfire and all runs sweet now. The cam gaskets failing can prove very costly. I reckon that the oil in cylinder 6 caused the lead to fail and misfire, which blew the near-side CAT and also shorted out the DIS pack on number 6. So a fair few hundred pounds worth of parts damaged due to a rubber seal failing.

Check they are connected up right first....as there are a number of (wrong) bits of info on this thread relating to what connects to what!

From my experience, if they aren't corrected properly the engine won't run.  Check and double check though!
