Do I need to put air into the system somewhere? And if so where?
The Mig I had a few years ago was a 98 2.5 Elite, and I remember reading in the destructions that I needed to put air into it somewhere for the suspension to work. I never actually had to do this, because the shocks were shot and I replaced them for normal shocks after about two weeks of owning the car.
My current car is a pre-facelift Elite, but I don't have the manual to check out this query...

No, if it's working properly the self levelling system has an air pump which supplies all the air needed.

Stick a weight (or get someone to stand) in the boot, turn the ignition to ON but don't start the engine ...... you should hear the pump start .. front corner drivers side under the wing ... and the back end should rise gracefully to the correct height, pump stops after about 30-45 seconds on mine.... works really well, especially with the 'van on the back .. :)

IIRC handbrake needs to be off whilst you do it, dunno why but that's what seem to remember.

Not on mine ... pump runs as soon as ignition is switched on ... mind you mines a facelift ... might be different on earlier models .. :)

Mine too Nige but I'm sure I've seen somewhere that you do the check with handbrake off. As I said don't know why unless it puts a strain on the cables when the body jacks up.

Found it .....
the "book of lies" page 10.11,
19. Park the vehicle (unloaded) on level gound. Release the handbrake and let the engine idle for a while, to allow the rear suspension ride height to stabilise. Re-apply the handbrake.
20. Measure the vertical distance from the gound to a convenient point on the rear bumper
21. Place a heavy load in the boot/load space. Release the handbrake and let the engine idle for a while, to allow the rear suspension ride height to stabilise. Re-apply the handbrake.
22. Repeat the measure carried out in para 20. If operating correctly the rear suspension control system should control the ride height to a value 3 to 5 cm less than the unloaded ride height within 20 seconds
23. Remove the load and allow the rear ride height to stabilse again. The system should return the ride height to the original unloaded ride height within 20 seconds
What a FAF .. I prefer my way !!! as a simple "is it working" check !!!
