Hi all, newbie here
Just purchased ebay item 110338999999 . Am a tad concerned that i have made a bad decision for that mileage and that price.
The seller, although having good feedback did not answer any of my questions before the auction closed and even now is very short and somewhat evasive - or maybe i am being paranoid?
Have also since found out there is no Haynes Manual for this engine and so maintenance is going to be a nightmare of a learning curve??
I also note the Cambelt was changed 34k miles ago. Is this a major event to change? I have spoken to various garages and thay have informed me its a 4hr job with all the correct tools.
Please provide your honest opinion folks.......
We have our anual driving hol to europe in June and want a car thats upto the job.
Whats the most critical probs/faults with this car/engine?
What mileage can be expected of the gearbox?
Kind Regards
Andy

Mileage dont seem that high so long as its had reg service (history), bought my 99 Est on ebay 2yrs ago apart from one minor prob it was sound but he did answer anything & everything I asked him! in fact money didnt change hands till it was all up & running !! !
Generally the Autos will do very high mileages, regarding the cambelt change it deffo does need doing every 40k so a few miles left in yet.
Car looks pretty tidy well looked after, if your worried go view it, I would if not too far away, then if it drives ok& all the electrics he mentions work probably a decent buy, seems to me anyway.. :o
Some of our experts will be on later see what they say as some of them buy & sell Omegas reg :y
-
Bot being funny you bid to buy not to see. Unless the desc is incorrect then you shouldnt have a choice over buying it
-
Cmabelt kit every 40k/4yrs, no exceptions. Not that hard to do yourself - we even sell a DVD to guide you ;D
134k is nothing for these engines - my own MV6 has 150k on, and the engine is good.
Mine used to go on annual trips to South of France - the Omega really is a mile eater, and I had no problems doing the Midlands to Montpellier in a day, non stop (I'd have a 2 hour kip around midday when she drove).
As an old hand at long journeys in a V6 Omega, I know always to carry a spare crank sensor in the boot ::)
-
looks a nice car bud ! cambelt will need doing in 6k you will be looking major money at a garage :(

Hi Andy and welcome to OOF! :y :y :y :y
You'll find lots of very useful and helpful advice from some very knowledgeable people and some great banter so don't be afraid to join in, but be warned... This site is VERY addictive ;) ;) ;) :y :y :y
Right, to answer your concerns. The car looks like it's in great condition and as for the price... Fair I'd say as long as it all works as he said :y :y :y
Although there isn't a Haynes book of Lies manual for that particular model year you can get the earlier one as the engine is the same (yours is an early facelift) and you'll escape the horrendous VED increases proposed by Grabber Brown's mob :y :y :y
As for mileage expectations from it... If it's well maintained then the V6's can easily see 200+k!
Have a good read through the maintenance guides to get some ideas of what to expect but as a guide I would suggest you budget on needing to do the following in the first year:
Cambelt Kit and Water pump, with complete new coolant.
Clean Breather System and replace Cam Cover Gaskets.
Front Wishbones.
Full geometry set up (not just Tracking) at Wheels in Motion or similar company.
Full service and oil & Filter changes every 3-4k.
Crank Sensor. (cheers TB, I forgot that one ::) ::))
Although this sounds bad it's actually not! If you're competent with spanners then most can be done yourself for a reasonable cost (and lots of swearing ::) ::) ::))
If not, ask around. Lots of guys here will help out if convenient :y :y :y
I'd suggest you update your user profile so we know where you are :y :y :y
Finally, enjoy the Miggy... It's a lot of car for very little money and they just keep on going :y :y :y

The price looks good - make sure he has a full service history. The cars will run for hundreds of thousands of miles provided they are looked after. There are several OOFers here who have cars in excess of 150k miles without problems.
Don't worry about maintenance - this site is packed with friendly, helpful people who will assist you with any problem. If you're prepared to wield a spanner or two and follow instructions, then you'll be fine. I have no mechanical experience at all, yet have managed to change the cambelt, water pump, aux belt, and clean breathers with just the assistance of the forum (and a £100 halfords tool set). - Next week I'm doing the steering idler and wishbones, and I have no concerns at all!
Take it for a spin and make sure you're happy that all the bits work - the climate control should go from freezing to hairdryer hot when the engine's warm, the autobox should change up and down smoothly without clunks, and the braking should be smooth.
You may experience some tramlining or a 'wiggling' front end, which can be cured by changing the steering idler for about £30.
Also make sure that the engine management light (EML) isn't lit - guides on here to read the codes that will tell you if there is problems.
Looks like a good car - good luck with it!
-
Yeah looks ok for the money, BUT 1 prob how dare he deface it with what looks like a suzuki s on the back! OK rant over (if he wanted a different make why not buy one ) . Im proud to own an omega! as i asume most if not all miggie owners are.

Two hours tops for a cambelt change....
If you're an expert like you, you mean!
Took me four hours (first timer). ;D ;D ;D ;D

Believe me, MDTM can do it in under an hour...
Last one I did took about 2 and a half, but I had one hell of a hangover from a midday to 3am 'gentlemens night' the night before ::)

Exactly, if paying to have it done by a trained pro then 2 hours is giving them plenty of slack!

do the cambelt and tensioners straight away regardless of when they were last done, for your own peace of mind, and as far as lack of haynes manual, the engine is not too dissimilar from the 94-99 ones, not to mention the endless help you'll always have from here
looks a very nice car for £1100 tho :D

Do I detect a hint of regret in your post there, Corsa boy :D :D :D :D :-? :-? :-?
-
hmmnnn seems like an awful lot of work for the road outside my house :o
Whats needs doing to wishbones? :-?
-
Fear not... We're giving you an idea of the common things, they probably wont all need doing straight away :y :y :y
Wishbone bushes are a common weak point on the Omega, actually on most cars bigger than a fiesta, and it's easier to change the complete wishbones out. Not too bad a job really and a good guide on this site! Takes me a little over an hour a side, including jacking up the car, at a moderate pace but I am reasonably experienced ::) ::) ::)
-
Nice car and you got it at a fair price - as a comparison I bought mine 4 months ago (CDX saolon) for much the same price but less mileage (82k at the time) but mine hasn't got leather - so far I have spent £160 on spare & repairs (all done by myself) inc. new oil, air, fuel filters; new spark plugs, new rear brake discs + pads, new cam cover gaskets - still got to fix rear pinion oil seal leak and change gearbox oil then next year it will be cam belt change - so maintenance is an on going thing all the time but if you keep on top of it they are a pleasure to drive and are quite reliable. :y
-
wow this site has a plethora of information :y
ok do we know what year the oil cooler on the v6 went to stainless?
next question; the torx bits that are required for the cam belt change, are these male or female?
cheers folks :)

Female IIRCC... But you must use a proper locking kit otherwise the timing will be wrong :y :y :y

As already stated get the cambelt replaced regardless of what he has said in his listing. The thing is he may just have had the cambelt replaced and not the tensioners. Having the cambelt changed without the tensioners is the cheaper way out as it's not the belt that goes it's the tensioner's. Looks a nice miggy there you have bought, clean, and looks well looked after (bodywork wise that is). Hope you have plenty of years in her as well, but keep on top of the maintenance though or you will pay in the end.

just out of interest, do the 2.2 have cam belt or chains? petrol that is.

Read up and print out the paperclip test ....
http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1189022687
and do it when you check the car, for 2 main reasons ... firstly .. to make sure the EML light works .. it is not unknown for the bulb to be removed to hide problems .... secondly it will tell you of any MAJOR ongoing engine problems.
If the seller won't let you do it ... walk away .. he has something to hide .. :)

Remember he's bought it on ebay - bid to buy not bid to haggle, tyre kick, carry out AA inspection etc. Long as car matches sellers description and any answers given to questions posed buyer can't quibble.
Opportunity offered by buyer to view car before sale ended to look over - that was the time to inspect!!
Looking at the car looks in good nick and sure worth what you paid despite the mileage. These V6s are renowned for covering high mileages if properly maintained - just think (personnel view) that for the money I would have expected a lower mileage example.
Good luck :y

if there's something to hide, it wont have been mentioned on the listing, therefore no legal obligation to buy as it might have been mis-described :y

Had Mayo under the oil filler cap - and lots of it!
Just goes to show. For the sake of a non paying bidder strike, i walked away.
Gone and bought a 2002 Mondeo 2.0TDCi instead this morning.
Thanks for all your help and comments though folks.

was there mayo in the coolant or on the dipstick? if not, the mayo would have cleared after a good motorway blast to get the engine to optimum running temp
-
Mayo can be normal on a Miggy, if it only does alot of short runs...

That is a cold weather thing - if the dipstick is clear it is fine

so that will be someone else with the opinion (filth filth)that ebay is full of t£ssers and twunts then as well as jamesv6cdx. ;D
-
To be fair that cars been up on ebay for ages and sold 3 times to my knowledge, which goes to suggest it is not as described.......
-
It was thick, like a jar of mayo under the cap. I know what slight moisture is and that was not the case with this Omega.
For all the folks going on about ebay, well it works both ways. Yes am sure the seller is pi**ed but to be fair, its also my hard earned cash. Would any of you let yourself be f***d over by a garage?? nevermind a private individual.
the guy disnt seem all that entirely suprised when i walked away either. An he was very evasive with the questions i asked. left one word answers and all that.
I guess a learning curve for both parties. It is very difficult not to get wrapped up with the excitement of an auction at the time.
Anyway, once again, thanks all for all your advice. The Omega is a very nice motor. Pity GM decided to drop it.
Cheers 8-)

Hmm a shifty seller - just what you don't want :(
-
And the moral of the story is......... be very wary about buying cars on ebay.
Of the 10 or so cars I was seriously interested in buying one had been an insurance write off and another had been clocked after HPI checks.
I wouldn't buy another car off ebay - I can't anyway - wife has banned me from doing so after getting fingers burnt on more than one occassion :'(
