Title: Grrr! Getting silly now!
Post by: GmasterT on 30 January 2009, 08:30:09
I know, I know, another question from me!  ::)

This missfire, started as a code on the D/side cyls missing so inspected, cleaned up (bit of oil in there) and refitted... ok for 10mins then miss back (keeps cutting into 'safe' mode on the eml) Checked again and no oil etc, so last night changed those 3 plugs... no difference! And now all the plugs are claiming a missfire!

All I have done recently is the clutch, are you able to get the front and rear lambda plugs confused and would that cause this?

Seems ok after being warm and coaxed up to 4k rpm + but anything below that, throws a wobbler and the eml flashes.

Going mad now, any ideas?!  :y

Sorry to ask this but have you checked the plugs, leads, dispack/coilpack, no 19 fault code?

The 3 plugs I change (from the orginal fault code) where fine, but changed them anyway as a precaution.

I dont have leads, its a DBW 3.2 so have 2 seperate coil packs, again inspected the one I can get too (the one related to the original right bank problems) and visually ok, but hard to check further.

Once warm it mostly seems to perform ok at 4k rpm plus, but you have to coax it up there (to avoid the eml flashing in and knocking into safe mode) and then fuel consumption is non existant! Id have thought at 4k+ the coil packs would be worse though?

My suspisions on the lambda order are because most cars I know of the lambdas only really affect anything to 3-4k rpm?

Was hoping to do some driftys tomorrow too, so grrrr! lol

Right, just checked it out again, cleaned up the battery terminals (emiminating the eml light too) and still missing. OK at when you first start it but about 15-30 secs after starts its judder dance.

Latest codes are

0420 (Usual Lamda on bank A below par - been on for a while before no issue)
0704 (The mystery clutch switch, had a look at lunch, nothing on pedal mech from what I can see)
0300 (Random miss)
030* 1,3,5 and 4
0304 came up twice as has 0301 oddly enough... I gather if this is the case, Tech 2 is the only way forward for something a bit more accurate?  :y

pull both coil packs(screw a suitable size bolt into the brass holes, cover with a rag to protect  and pull) and check the plastic for splits and cracks, and the rubber boots for splits, they may well be cooked from the oil. Examine the plugs for black tracks and scores in the insulator, clean off or replace again if damaged. 1 3 5 is drivers side 4 is middle pass side. Diag by pot 1 on cam cover for which is which, or there is on mine. :-)

Cheers Chris, Yesterday changed 1,3&5 plugs altogether and pots still dry from previous clean up a few days previous. Coil pack looks fine too from numerous inspections, although always hard to tell. Cyl 4 is the baffling one and also the much harder side to get too! (Will look tomorrow though)

Tonight I checked over all the induction track, changed the left 'bagpipe' as the plastic has gone soft and I suspect its sucking smaller than what it should be, no real difference though, seems to be slightly better as long as you dont rag it, but I didnt buy it for that  :D

My only other finding so far which I have not spotted is I suspect a slight blow where the drivers downpipe meets the manifold, which would give false lamda readings probably?! (I'm obsesed with these stupid lambdas!) But I am unsure if '0420 low eff. on cats on Bank A' refers to the drivers side or passenger and if its the same one as before the clutch change.

Still doesnt explain miss on cyl 4 though if that is the case, oh and it appears to have developed a water leak when turned off on the passanger side near the front of the engine... grrrr!

Just another note, once it throws its 'wobbler' and the EML light kicks in, it runs much worse, worse even than the miss that causes the eml light to flash, however, a quick on and off of the engine and it goes ok for a while untill you get to the stage of making the eml light come on.

Its generally ok to run through the gears on light throttle, although the higher the revs the better, doesnt like low to mid range load (causes the eml flashing). Starting varies from sounding ok, to instantly running on 5 and lumpy. Put some injesctor cleaner in with some 99ron. Also changing the fuel filter (hopefully) tomorrow too, but likey unrelated.

 :)

Mike Dundee had a similar problem, he changed both his coilpacks and the problem stopped. can't remember 100% what the problem was but think it was to with something arcing ...
Mark knew what it was... :-[
