Title: Where is the Oil Filter !!! V6 Omega - V Plate
Post by: Andy J B on 31 January 2009, 12:44:30
Hi all,
I have a V Plate 2.5V6 Omega.  I understand (from the dealer !) that the Oil Filter on my model is a Paper filter type (I have the pre face lift model - one of the very last ones I guess if a V plate.

Where and how do I remove and change the Oil Filter ?  I was going to treat it to an Oil change, but the haynes manual I have doesn't seemed to talk about the paper filter.  I can't see the old Tin Can oil filter type on the engine, so I guess its hiding ?

Any advice on how to change oil and filter on these types ?  ANything to watch out for on these ? (other than getting oil in the face  :'(

Thanks in advance.

Andy.

Lol, its a metal can by the bell housing on the passenger side.

Its shown here:

And the cap should only be hand tight so lets hope thelast monkey to do an oil change has not overtightened the lid

Passenger side - if you lie on the ground and look up behind the front wheel and forwards a bit you will see an alloy cannister.   Be warned they have a tendency to have been over torqued by monkeys in the past.

24mm ring spanner or socket. dont be tempted to use a square plug in the hole at the end, if its a bit tight you can split or damage it.

I must be good then! I'veonly ever used the 3/8" drive square hole! ;D  ;D  ;D  :y

Must confess, first change I used a spanner as it was a little tight >:( >:( >:( Luckily the whole canister didn't spin! Now I just use a 3/8 ratchet, like I did this afternoon :y :y :y

IMHO if you have done a filter change, and put it back on properly ...

ie 15 Nm ... (and not a squeeze more)

then its probably OK to use the square drive .. but if you suspect the garage monkey has used a scaffold pole/windy hammer set at wheel nut torques .. then the 24 mm ring is the way to go .. :)

Probably :y
A bit like the extendable wheel braces. Extended for undoing the wheel nuts/bolts and shortened for tightening up ( at the road side with no torque wrench  ...... ;)) not extended for reeeeally tightening them up! :-?  :-?  :y

THANKS TO ALL for the post.  I have a fighting chance now !

Any advice on fitting the new paper filter - Is there a knack or anything to watch our for ?  I believe there is an O ring ?  is a Patern filter part OK, or is it best to use a OEM one from VX ?

How many times does the metal cover spin off in ?  not done one before so just want to know what to expect really.

Any advice on oil to use - I assume 10/40 Semi.

Thanks again,
Andy.

The filter drops into the cover, I can't remember  :-[ but I think it locates on a few pins on the filter .... or is that my bike?  ::). Don't cross the threads, they're quite fine. The 'O' ring sits on the outside of the cover. Don't over tighten it when you fit it. 15Nm is more or less hand tight.

just did mine yesterday so it is fresh in the mind.  there is a bi o ring that goes around the filter cap (the bit you unscrew), smear with oil when you replace it as it will make it easier to tighten the cap.  The filter clips in the filter cap - usually quite firmly so it is dead easy to refit.  when refitting you'll be able to turn the cap about 2-3 times easily, you'll then feel the o ring start to compress so get a wrench on it.  Do not over tighten.  that goes for the sump plug as well.

Really it is dead easy

as to oil  I'd go for 10/40 semi synth from VX.  change it every 5-6k as well

Best bet is to get a 4 pack of oil on trade club (you'll need a TC card from someone on here or join autobahnstormers) , should be about £9 a can (but i havent' bought any for a while as I stocked up a year or two ago).
