Title: MV6 3ltr Help
Post by: sophos9 on 04 February 2009, 09:57:00
Hi,

I'm on the verge of buying a facelift MV6 barge - the particular one is advertised with one tappet is noticeable from cold start but soon becomes quiet - comes with full service history though...

Last cambelt change was at 61, car is now on 103k so needs to be done regardless (got the kit and have done it before)

How much of a problem is one tappet from cold (presuming its the tappet and not the tensioner) - apparently its done it for about the last year?

Thanks in advance

It could be an exhaust manifold gasket blowing which is quite common. If it is the follower tapping a few short oil changes could do the trick, if its the exhaust manifold gasket, I hope its the driverside ;)

Yea, passenger side is an engine out(ish) job right?

How would I diagnose this and what are the implications of a blowing exhaust gasket?

Thanks mate

Another things - are MV6's manual transmission not auto (or was it an option?)

The passenger side gasket requires the engine lifting off its mountings and moving over slightly. I would get the bonnet up and have a good listen down the side and ontop of the engine to pinpoint where the noise is coming from.

Bugger - the car is about 150miles away so travelling to do a diagnoses is an arse...

Will contact the seller initially and ask them what side of the engine bay its coming from, if its passenger then I dont think I'll bother with it

If the car is cheap enough then its worth doing, its not that bad a job ;)

Hi,

Its £1400 for a 3ltr MV6, FSH with 103k on the clock - all round good condition

Only other thing wrong is drivers heated seat does not work (they all fail dont they  :) )

Thinking of offering £1200 in light of the cambelt change

What you think?

If its a 3.0 I presume its a 99 to 2001 in which case I would say its a bit expensive, has it got leather?

could the tappet noise from cold be a lazy lifter, as is common on the 3.2? Usually cured by an immediate and further oil changes at 3-5k intervals.

Or is this less common on short plenum engines?

Pretty common...will have a long plenum anyway lol

Yep is a long plenum...

So - is an offer of £1200 too much still, please post what you would give for it ;)

I've looked at Parkers guidelines and they suggest £1100 is good nick?

It reached £1000 first time round and didn`t make reserve. On a W plate (if it`s the one I`m thinking of) that`s about top dollar
