Title: 2.5V6 Major Running Problems
Post by: RobWheatley on 04 February 2009, 13:12:21
Hi all
My 98 2.5V6 auto is causing big problems at the moment, it keeps cutting out when slowing down, running rough when driving along and generally being a pain to drive, the only way to keep it going is to left foot brake and hold the throttle open so the revs dont get below 1500, problem there is the autobox then gets very hot.  When you get out of traffic and driving along it will surge at anything below 70mph feeling as if its running out of fuel (have left the fuel cap undone and no difference) then all of a sudden it will clear and be ok for a while.
It can do it from cold or hot but doesnt do it all the time, sometimes it will be ok for days and other times it will do it all the time.
It does have a slight leak from the left hand cam cover but it is very slight, I have cleaned the breathers out so know they are clear.
I have also changed the MAF in the past as that failed.

Since i have had the car the EML has been on when it gets warm, fault code that comes up is 61, fuel tank vent valve, but never made any difference to the running (have noticed that using the cruise the EML will go out when going up hill and come on again when coasting down hill)
I need to get this sorted ASAP as with the bad weather I am having too use it to commute the 40 miles to work instead of the bike, each day i dont get there it costs me a fortune in lost wages.
Please help.
Rob

Forgot to mention, done the paperclip test even when it is playing up and no other fault codes show.

Sounds like you either have a leak in the fuel vent pipework or your purge valve is on the way out :y

Hi Rob
What and where is the purge valve and being fuel injected how would a leaking fuel vent pipework cause the problems or is that the code 61 that is showing?

The fuel vent control system  traps and stores evaporative emissions from the petrol tank. A charcoal canister is used to trap the fuel vapours. The fuel vapours adhere to the charcoal, until the engine is started, and engine vacuum can be used to draw the vapours into the engine, so that they can be burned along with the fuel/air mixture. The tank has to have the space for the vapours to collect so that they can then be vented to the charcoal canister. A purge valve is used to control the vapour flow into the engine. The purge valve is operated by engine vacuum. One common problem with this system is that the purge valve goes bad and engine vacuum draws fuel directly into the intake system. This enriches the fuel mixture and will foul the spark plugs. Most charcoal canisters have a filter that should be replaced periodically.
Purge valve is at the rear of the plenum, driver`s side :y

Hi mate
try changing the air mass sencer which is in between the air filter and the muilt ram tubing
These are expensive and i think their are two types, please correct me if i'm wrong, when you get it of, just jublie clips you will see a fuse link inside which can break roughly 80 pounds plus, i had the same trouble, swopped a know good one from my fathers car, same car, no trouble, replace mine to his, loads of trouble.  :)
