seem to have an odd metalic grating noise from the front n/s on left turns. only does it when travelling forwards. have jacked the front up, spun the wheel & no noise. cant see anything rubbing & have also bent the disc backing plate out a little. any idea`s please?. :y
-
I would probly start by havin a quick look at the brake shoe/disc condition, then possibly wheel bearing?

discs fine & the pads have loads of meat on em :y

Sorry i mean brake PADS doh!!!

When its off the ground is there any freeplay on the wheel? Could be the old wishbone issue?
-
I had that problem on my old 2.0 estate and it was worn wisbone rubbers allowing the tyre to just snag the mudflap when turning left, new wisbones cured the problem.
Worth checking if you have mudfaps, if not I don't know what the problem is.

My money's on wishbones Jon :y :y :y
-
if it was wishbones John wouldn,t they have fond that on mot?
-
paul, its just gone through an mot & no mention of wishbones on it. got me baffled this one has. :o

Didn't realise it's just been mot'd... Still check them though... Front bush :y :y
Wouldn't be the first time an MOT tester has missed something ::) ::)
Other than that... Start checking everything methodically :y :y

have you checked wheel bearings Jon
-
Wishbones only fail MOT if freeplay is excess - could still be enough to cause noise, i agree about the bearing check tho. ;)

I will have a check tommoz. doesnt seem like a bearing noise though. will be just my luck to get loads of snow tommorow. oh hum. ;)

Mudflaps are fouling the tyres, I have just had exactly the same problem. New wishbones and full alignment made it better, but I took the mudflaps off this afternoon and now its gone :y
Cheers,
Richard

No mudflaps fitted.

Now I had that on my cav a couple of years ago. Turned out the top bolt between the hub and strut on the front had broken so everytime it turned it would tip a bit and rub the rim edge on the strut.
-
interesting. will have a look in the fresh light of the day tommoz. :y

Does the noise only appear when turning one corner? Dissappear when going opposite corner? Potential wheel bearing.
Jack up suspect corner, grasp wheel at 3/9 the 12/6 position and try to find any free play by pushing/pulling with each hand. Repeat with alternate positions. Then repeat with footbrake applied. If relative movement is the same, then fubar wishbonesd or suspension components. If play goes with footbrake applied, then wheelbearing.
Howtoo in maint section and jobs a good un'.... :y

right, just been out to car. no play in the bearing at all. however, it has a warped disc. spun wheel & i can hear the pads touching in 2 places. could this be the prob.?.

Was that with the wheel removed.....?
If it was then its not a valid test
-
i spun it up with the wheel on. & checked the play with wheel on.
-
ok. took wheel off, removed caliper/pads & mounting bracket. removed disc. out of curosity i spun the hub. sounds like a bag of grated iron filings(rough) going round, think its fubbered even though i couldnt find any play in it with the wheel on. :-?

Of 13 cars attending the wim open day, 12 made it on the lift, ten of those could not be set up, due mainly to buggerd wishbone bushes. All cars had a valid MOT!
As the bushes wear, the wishbone moves position in the sub frame clamp, in some cases they move enough to rub on the subframe bracket.
If the noise is suspension related, ie as the wait of the car moves when cornering, then personally i would strongly suspecst wishbones.
The old wishbones in my curren car used to creak over speed humps from cold. The noise has gone with new items fitted. Hth

there is slight play in the front bush.
