I've bought one of those multi card readers to download info from digital camera memory cards etc. This unit fits into a spare 3 1/2 bay. There is a length of cable with a rectangular 10 way plug at each end (2 rows of 5 with 1 pin blanked off)
Unfortunatly the instructions are missing from the pack. Now I have e-mailed the e-bay seller to request them but in the mean time, does anybody know where it should plug in?
I can't see any spare sockets on the motherboard so i assume that it will connect to the USB plugs on the front of the PC.
Haven't figured out how to get those out yet. (Dell dimension 5100)
Can anybody help?

Try to take a photo and post it up here so we can have a look. :)

Is it the same as the plug on the floppy drive ??

Probably the plug to connect to dual USB outputs on motherboard. USB uses 4 pins /line.. 2 power 2 data
Most of these multireaders use 2 lines .. the idea behind the 9 pins (10 but one blanked) is that it is impossible (?) to connect up the "wrong" way .. the 9th pin acts as a "key"

The rear usb ports are hard wired to the motherboard, the front ones are on a big ribbon cable
-
Have you got a floppy disc drive in there at the moment?

A what? Where?

i can send you an internal card reader for £8 if you want, you'll have to get it fitted yourself though
it's brand new, never been used
-
Nope.

Well, seeing as you can't post a picture yourself, for obvious reasons, here's one I prepared earlier.

It must go in there somewhere and someone with half a brain may come along soon and tell you where. :)

That's amazing seeing as i'm on line ;D
Yes that looks like the inside of my PC. The front ports plug into the board on the right hand side just underneath the PSU

okies ... I don't have a picture of YOUR motherboard .. but .. if it is CAPABLE of using an additional USB device it should have on it a set of pins for FP-USB (front panel USB) .. this is what you plug the cable into, the other end goes to a similar set of pins on the card reader
here is an example ......

On the edge of the existing fp usb there is a connector but a long single row one. Maybe i just need a different adaptor cable?
-
Probably not as the connectors are "standard". It is more likely that your motherboard does not support additional USB's.. in which case you have options..
1. Bin the additional device :(
2. Buy a PCI plug in USB addon card, many of these have the extra pins inboard, this would also give you more USB's at the back.
3. Unplug the existing FP USB and use it for the card reader, but lose the front panel USB's
