What age is the car?

Do the fans come on at 97C?

I do believe this is normal, the temp gauge should stay between 90 -96 degrees.

Sounds a tad high to me.

If you needed to flush the heater matrix, perhaps the main rad needs some tlc.  Try flushing that a number of times (reverse flush if possible).
- There have been many a thread on here about the same and folk seem to have a good degree of success if they continually flush though the radiator.

Only hassle - need to end up with a good mix (50%) of antifreeze (vx pink to be reccomended) when done.

Sounds about right - around mid-point on the gauge.

Does it ever go much higher than 96C?
