Title: 2000 omega 3.0 v6 changed cambelt now knocking?
Post by: stemon on 13 February 2009, 21:01:23
Hi guys just changed my v6 cambelt , all the timing marks are spot on and tensioned correct, used autodata for all settings, have done loads of belts in the past inc v8 4.0 lexus vvti's ect so fairly confident.

that said, im only using timing marks on rear belt cover and bottom crank with its mark at the bottom. im guessing these should be correct as long as the rear cover hasnt been moved at all? or anything else been messed with.

anyhow i now get a knock that sounds like a knocking cam/lifter in the left bank? it knocks on tick over , goes at 1.5k rpm and comes back about 2k ish. the car was standing for a while before the belt was changed .  any ideas would be great as im puzzled. could it be timing issues or seized lifter?  engine was fine before it came off the road with only 90k on the clock.

You have to set these up with correct locking kit.

there is no way you can time it correctly with out the proper tools ;)

i got into a big discussion on this when i first joined and was rightly TOLD how it is :-[ you can't just time on belt and pulley marks because the fine adjustment is set by the tensioner pulleys.

you need the kit :y

Could just be a noisey lifter...

...BUT...

you cannot do a GM V6 cambelt without the full locking/timing kit.  The marks are a mere guide, not accurate enough.  The GM one has infinately variable valve timing.  I think if you got it on the marks, its close enough not to cause damage though.  Expect to pay £50-£150 for a locking/timing kit.

Presumably you did the full cambelt kit, not just the belt? If not, take it off and do the entire kit again :)

To do it properly you need the Locking kit.

Sure we have members around your area with locking kit who may be willing to lend or possible even cast an eye over whilst you do it...

Mine did that when I changed my belt last year at the Ruffort meet, I think it’s more of a coincidence though, as mine shut up once it was warm, and it very rarely taps now (may get the odd tap on start-up when its freezing cold outside)

You will need the locking kit though tapping or not tapping! As you adjust the idler pulleys, your actually effecting the valve timing between the banks, so you could have the left bank bang on, and the right bank could be miles out for example!
