car is a 99 but def a face lift, cdx, manual gear box, owner describes it as a metalic clunck when changeing gear from 1st and second! But not hurd it myself.

If this has a dual mass fly wheel that would be my starting point.

aw, being an auto box owner i could do with a bit of do education. How would that show itself...exactly?
My first thought when told about it was maybe the engine is moving about and clanking the exhaust due to a buggerd engine mount? Or something more involved as you suspect.
I suppose with the engine mount theory it would not only clunck when changing gear but when slamming on and off the throttle?
With the dual mass issue at what point in the gear change would it clunck? When the clutch dis and re engages or when dis engaged allowing something to bang around when loose and not held in place by clutch pressure?

Only mentioned dual mass as start point as they can get a clunck that is quite noticable when they are at the end of there useful life.
If you jack up 1 rear wheel and put the car in 1st gear (engine off) and rock the wheel back & forward you should hear it.
But there again it could be that there is something else about give up.

on my old 2.5 auto I used to get a clunk from the rear when changing up. Turned out the diff had sprung a leak and was a bit short on fluid. Topped it up and noise went away.

ok, ta, that 2 things to look for, anything else to look at that may cause this?
