Hi...I am new here and seeking some advice...
I bought an '94 Omega Elite with 3.0L V6 to replace my old '89 Senator restoration project.
Advice needed with the Omega V6. Car passed MOT emissions mid January 09, car drives well, accelerates well, but has tapping noise at tpo of engine. Cam belt was changed last year.
I intend to investigate whether hydraulic lifters are pumping up properly. Engine oil is OK but seems thin and weak type of oil. First I was going to drain oil, change filter, renew with good quality oil, maybe even Slick 50, and see how this helps. If not then take off rocker covers and manually inspect valve gear/cam. The noise is not like a worn cam noise, so believe it might be hydraulic lifters. Does not affect driveability in any way...Any helpful advice welcome...Thanks...

A few oil changes every 3-4K using VX semi-synthetic should cure it :y

Does sound like a sticky lifter or 2 ;)

Hi RobG and Dazzler
Thanks for your replies and advice....
The Elite is very good in other respects, minor blemishes, but nothing bad. So just this engine tapping to sort out..

Sounds like a lifter, unless it shuts up, in which case, manifold gasket.
Might be worth doing some very short oil changes (couple of hundred miles)

.. and don't bother with
Slick 50 snake oil.

Hi TheBoy and Kevin Wood
Thanks for your replies.
So I will do regular short oil changes, and NO snake oil...
Dunno what oil is in it now ??
Clean and not burnt, but as thin as water..LOL

You've just swapped one lot of problems for another set of far more complicated problems! ;) ;) ;) :y

Hi Andy B
OK, yes this did occur to me, but I will persevere and hopefully enjoy the Omega as much as I did the Senator...

AndyB has rose tinted glasses when it comes to those old rust buckets... :P

I must admit to having had "rose tints" with certain vehicles...
