Title: Steering box
Post by: bighed on 16 February 2009, 16:32:47
the last fortnight my estate has become less "responsive" at the old wheel. Thinking its slack in the steering box. Are there any pics of what part needs adjusting and a how to anywhere?  :y

On the top of the steering box is an adjustment (torx bolt I think) held with a locking nut. Release locknut to make minor incremental adjustments :y

suggest checking first. Stand outside the car engine running and reach through the open window to stearing wheel while feeling front wheel movement by hand. Try in various positions. Not just straight ahead. Also check track rod ends, stearing idler, and more likely, wishbone bushes.
When adjusting mine i found very little play but slightly more in straight ahead/centred position. I only took out the off centre play. To adjust further would be over tight in all positions except straight ahead. Thats how i did mine anyway. Hth

My mate is a mechanic albeit a ford vans one. He checked ALL bushes for play and they seem fine.  :-/
