Post by: vc009 on 21 February 2009, 10:59:39
hey, i just decided to check the oil level on my omega 2.6 this morning and found it slightly low, while adding some oil i noticed a mayo(white substance) on the oil cap and also some in the oil stem.. i have checked the coolant level its fine, the cambelt water pump plugs etc have all been changed, i drive a lot around town and the car is on gas. any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Mayo build up on the cap is normal for the v6 engine as the filler neck is high up and therfore colder air so that causes condensation and mayo.take the a good splat down the motor way for 20 miles or so and the mayo sould start to clear. Some brands of oil also more prone to mayo build up so you can also change theoil to gen vx oil and this seems to resist the mayo build up better then others. Dont worry it is not the head gaskets going.
Short town driving is what is causing this mayo and lpg is not the problem

thank u! that makes me feel a lot better, i was worried that the next thing after all the work ive put in is the head going!. do u think its also a good idea to take a paper towel and wipe the cap and clean the mayo off?

agreed, i thoguht exactly the same and found out its nothing to worry about, its the laws of physics im afraid. I check mine often and when ive been going to work via motorway nohting, just cruising about town then it does build a little up.

You can remove the neck from the cam cover with out any tools. if you look at the neck at the bottom you will see a torx bolt in a round hole in the neck plastic, put your finger down and you will feel the plastic has a lip to it , lift the lip and twist the neck and remove the neck out of the cam cover. wash it out and replace. You can also put the oil cap directly into the cam cover and do with out the neck but adding oil is a bit more difficult without it.

nothing to worry about in the neck but bare in mind its a clue to the level of condensation in the engine(short journeys?) and breathers will be in similar condition as The Boy will tell you.

If the breathers block the cam cover gaskits will blow filling your plug wells with oil, missfires will follow and new plugs leads and dis pac could well be needed potentially.

Stick to GM oil, its cheapest esp on trade club and best for the car, change it regular. Try to avoid short journeys and give the car a good run/work out once a week. Hth

yea i tend to do a lot of short runs around town. Maybe she needs to be booted down the m4 for a while! will get round to changing the oil next week. As of now i wiped the mayo off the cap. will check it again this week. mind when i topped up the oil i topped it up with castrol magnetec 10w/40. i hope that was alright!(had some in the house)

VX oil is better and if you get a trade card,a lot cheaper. :y
