Title: Misting Windscreen - any further guidance
Post by: HotShot on 22 February 2009, 10:09:48
My windcreen mists-up (in 5-45 seconds) when using the econ heating.

I have cleared out both bonnet holes (one was blocked, I used a jet wash to clear it), they run clear and changed the pollen filter (still dry) - all done some 4 months ago.

There's no water in passenger footwell (or the CD changer pocket),  or anywhere else.

Since I got this one I have had to use the AC constantly to get any heat and still see!

She's not losing water or oil.

What am I missing? She's costing a fortune to run!

Thanks

Is your pollen filter still clean.  It shouldn't be clogged up after only 4 months tho.
A change was well overdue with mine. It was dry but all clogged up with dirt and dust.
Once changed it brought an instant end to my misting up issue.

Mine has always misted up say a few times a year connected with general climate change usually when car has been parked in exposed place - say station car park. I have climate control on mine.

Econ makes it worse when you have the misting up problem - different things can be effective - like putting both sides of climate control to highest temperature but not using the windscreen clear button (if you use this button of ocurse it knocks it off auto).

After startup, if it misting up, press the re-circ button to internal re-circ and back to normal/auto.

Sometimes the climate softare gets its knickers in a twist and gets stuck on internal re-circ, doing the above sorts it all out

Whilst we're on the subject of the re-circulating button. There should be three settings:

Off (no circle displayed)
Manual (circle displayed)
Auto (circle with an "A" in the centre displayed).

I can no longer get the Auto setting.  Any ideas why or how to re-set or fix ?

I think you can only get the auto setting with the aircon turned on.....if so, the fix would be to turn the aircon back on.....im pretty sure thats how it behaved in my 2.2.  :y

A new filter has made a load of difference in SWMBO's Astra G

I also find that cleaning the glass inside with the Autoglym glass cleaner cream (not the spray) works wonders as well...  removes the accumulated film.  Its this which tends to mist over, not the glass, initially.....   :y

Thanks for the replies.

I had the same issue with my last Omega; solved by clearing the bonnet drain holes and replacing the pollen filter. Yes, I let it dry for 2 weeks before fitting the new pollen filter - which is still dry & clean.

So I did the same with this Omega; but she still mists up, all the vents are clear, including the one in the boot (where the CD changer can be). The carpets are all dry, inc the passenger footwell...

AC always clears it in seconds, but if I try any heat on ECO mode it mists-up [badly] inside of 30 seconds, always.
This happens throughout 2 mile or 200 mile journeys, whether the engine is cold or hot.

*Pollen filter is clean as a whistle & dry, as are the bonnet/windscreen drain holes*

I've cleaned all the windows, with alchohol based cleaners and Duraglit (Silver polish wadding) as it's a very mild abrasive that eats grime - clean as a whistle.

The fault, I believe has to lie in the heating system, could it be the heating matrix be leaking, gently into heating system, but I am by-passing it [the leak] when using the AC - daft statement I know, but I am clutching at straws now.

As a desparate attempt at a fix, I have turned to a 2nd-hand car salesman's solution to reduce damp - put some cat littler in a vacuum bag and put it under the drivers seat.
But all that has proved is that I have very little damp in the car!

Pollen filter right way round?
I applied my logic and it was wrong. The guys on here put me right. Do a search (3 months?).

If the drain on the passenger side was blocked at any time, the water would have pouerd over the header motor lip and down behind the carpet, soaking the sponge soundproofing, altho the carpet may feel dry now, im sure you will find the soundproofing is still saturated, its very hard to get rid of the water from them.

I went mad and removed the front carpets, took out the soundproofing, which weighed a ton from all the water, and let them dry in the garage fr 2 or 3 weeks before refitting.

been perfect since.

Not wanting to repeat myself....but your issue is resolved above.....its a known fault with an official technical bulletin

I leave AC on all the time

little difference to fuel

no chance of seals drying
