Title: MOT fail, what to do now
Post by: John Lewis on 23 February 2009, 14:54:55
Hiya guys I've just had my mig tested and its failed on too much to repair. I wanna get rid and go for another one, preferably a 2.5. What I don't want to do is cheese anyone off on here by posting anything I shouldn't, so can anyone offer some pointers on the best way to advertise it as a transplant car? I probably haven't posted enough to gain access to the for sale section!

Plus if anyone knows of a cheap 2.5 saloon (manual, cdx or up) going in the next few weeks I would appreciate a heads up ;)

Cheers ladies and gents

Hi John. I think firstly you should post what it failed on, it may be more "do-able" than you think, unless you are keen to get rid. Even if you have decided to change, it is far easier to sell it if you spend a few quid & get a year's ticket on it.
Just a thought.

Hi John,

Forum guidelines says:

"Currently, need to be a Junior Member (over 50 posts) to advertise your car, and an Intermediate Member (over 250 posts) to advertise parts."

I'd take Agemo's advice though.  What did it fail on?

John,

As stated, you have enough posts to advertise the car as a whole, just not in bits :y :y

The advice above is sound though... Post up what it's failed on and it may be worth doing the work :y :y :y

Unless this is a good reason to convince SWMBO that an upgrade is due ::) ::) ;) ;)

To be honest I weighed that up, but it's got an autobox problem too.i'm sure someone here could fix this little lot, but I see it as the perfect excuse to get a v6, LOL.

Points (notable)
Autobox needs work
Needs new climate fan (all climate parts have been replaced bar this)
Crack to drivers climate led (I have a spare unit with passenger one cracked to make 1 good one from)
Tappety sound on start
Possible blocked breather somewhere too

Points (MOT fail):
Front brake pads worn excessively
Nearside/offside coil springs incomplete
Nearside/offside shock absorbers have negligible damping effect
Nearside/offside rear shock absorbers have serious fluid leak
Nearside front tyre tread below 1.6mm
Nearside/offside front Macpherson strut upper support bearings are rough in operation
Offside front brake pipe excessively corroded
Exhaust emits excessive dense blue smoke at idle
Exhaust emits excessive dense blue smoke during acceleration

This lot, plus a lumpy autobox that slips out downhill @ 35mph.

plus points:
Cambelt replaced 500 miles ago
New camshaft sensor 400 miles ago
New cam cover gaskets 200 miles ago
New opposite front tyre 100 miles ago
No rust visible anywhere, although silver trim incomplete & rear offside door needs attention
Spare only just been used, 10 miles tops
72697 miles on an S plate
Cloth interior in good nick for age
Electrics all work fine, as do heated seats
Starts first time, never broke down in the year I've had it

So you see, someone *could* make a nice car here with decent access to a scrappy and mig knowledge, but I'm too busy to do it.

If anyone wants to move this post, feel free, but I reckon I'm gonna get rid rather than fix  :-[

Will keep my eye on the post guys  :y

Haha just googled SWMBO - she's up for it, (1) she won't drive an auto mig but would drive a manual, (2) she's got a brand spanking astra coupe with VXR kit on so won't begrudge me a modest upgrade!!

Maybe I'm a lazy sod, but I'd much rather drive an auto mig...

I'd rather drive any legal and/or working one right now to be brutally honest! Ha ha.

Right, I'm gonna put this up in the for sale section shortly with pics... Markey Mark is showing an interest but I said I'd get some pics up anyhow, so thats the place to do it I reckon.

Best of luck mate, this is the right place for it. The list looks depressing until you realise most of it is on one suspension leg. She will ride again!
Oh and put plenty of pics up!
