Title: Cylinder Head - or Not

Hi

Just out of interest, would a white emulsion like lining on the inside neck of the oil filler and solid oil coloured gunk under the oil filler cap mean that the cylinder head is on it's way out, or is it fairly normal on a 2.5V6 petrol engine?

I did'nt notice any coolant loss, although there was a slight oil leak.

White mayonaise is normal for the V6's if you do lots of short trips, a good blast up the motorway should cler most of it. As for the oil leak check the spark plug wells aren't full of oil.

Thanks for that.

I suspect the oil leak was from the rocker cover gasket, but I've actually sold the car now.

The guy that bought it did try to tell me that the cylinder head was on the way out, because of the 'mayonese' on the neck of the oil filler.

You have just confirmed what I thought though, as I thought I had heard it before, that it was normal on these and the car had never let me down and still had plenty of grunt!

I don't feel guilty about not reducing the price now!!!

Mayonaise in the filler neck is a sign of short journeys or cold weather...the filler neck is in the under-bonnet air flow so is the coldest bit of the oil system and where the water vapour condenses(from blow-by and fume dilution by cold wet air)
Black crud is a sign of a full dealer service history.
