Title: steering idler
Post by: unlucky alf on 25 February 2009, 10:00:05
ive got to change my steering idler as noticed a bit of play when doing my brakes, just want to know if the pivot needs to be greased?, looked in the haynes manual but tells me sod all but logic says grease it, if i do have to is it just a general grease or what.? :-/

I have done two, greased them both, grease probably not needed but did it so it would come off in the future. ::)

Grease not actually essential and not likely to aid removal in the future either due to them being a taper fit....would stop rusting...if the water could get into the uber tight taper!  :y

I think Alf's refering to the parrallel pivot pin rather than the taper ball joint bit.
I greased mine too! :y

yup i did say the pivot side of things, wouldnt grease the balljoint taper as it looks like itll spin around on tightening as it is ;)

The 'pivot' still has a tapered section on it....the actual pivot point is the rubber!

ended up jacking mine up to get enough friction on the taper to tighten nut - don't bother with grease ;)

so im still non the wiser :( perhaps thats why the haynes manual doesnt mention grease, they probably had a row about it themselves & thought "sod it, who cares" ;D

Q.  Do you need to do tracking/geometry after changing idler?
