how do i know if my car an mv6???
its an  (1996) N reg 3.0 elite saloon auto

Well its not an MV6 then.
Its an Elite which you have already said. They are 2 different spec levels.

What makes you think it might be an MV6  ??

Has it got MV6 parts on it ??
No doubt some people change carbon trim, alloys, etc to make "clone" MV6's...

You should get good help here...

i  need a backbox, and they say it will fit if its mv6???
i didnt know what mv6 is!!! so i asked... do you know if the exhaust sytem changed for this model???

No difference in exhaust between 3.0l of same age, irrelevent if MV6 or Elite (no other 3.0l available).

The one exception is the Irmscher type ones which need Irmscher type bumpers
