Going to view a V6 later with a view to snapping his arm off - short of leaks and mayo in the filler cap/dipstick, what else do you recommend I look for? Got a few rust spots on the door edges, nowt major.
Pls post your experiences here, cos my 2 litre was riddled with problems - fair enough I know them now, just not V6 things.

Mayo in the filler cap is not a problem - just symptomatic of short journeys.
Usual suspects are cambelt history (4 years/40k) - is it due/overdue - negotiating point. Leaking camcover seals - again not a reason to walk away but will cost you to put right.

Check for oil in the plug wells, check for evidence of the cam belt change (I'd probably budget to do it anyway), check all the relevant dash lights come and go off before you start it. I'd also go armed with a paperclip too :y

Here is my definitive checklist for buying a car - some I have deleted as not applicable - hope this helps :y
1) Is the mileage genuine/warranted?
2) Any leaks from engine, gearbox, brakes, radiator, power steering, air-con?
3) Any strange knocking, banging, grinding noises comming from the car?
4) Any warning lights that stay on when the car is driven?
6) Any outstanding finance owed on the car?
7) Has the car been involved in any accident & if so what was the damage & repair costs?
8) When was the cam shaft belt last changed?
9) Do all the "toys" on the car work ok & are there any electrical problems?
10) Do tyres have plenty of tread & is there a spare & a car-jack?
11) Any blue smoke comming from exhaust?
12) Any rips/tears in upholstery?
13) Has air-con been re-gassed recently?
14) Can you supply VIN, issue date & serial no. from V5.
15) Taxed?
16) mot'd
17) any service history?
18) Is exhaust blowing/corroded?

If it is a 2.5 and an automatic then mileage is pertinent (say 120k plus). The gearbox might be about to eat its thrust washer. Not the end of the world. Check for any clunks as it changes gear.

Haha funny you should say that varche, I got bit on my last auto (2.0) with the thrust washer thang, lumpy as hell, its reason why I'm getting a 2.5 manual this time.
Cheers for the list MF - its got plenty of service history, MOT, Tax, mileage OK, cambelt done (but I want evidence of this!). Most importantly I will HPI it after I've had a look I reckon. Now I need my paperclip! Anyone got a list of Omega B codes floating around?

I think there is a list of codes in the Maint section, although you need to be able to understand what they really mean as well.

Check the engine idle from cold to hot whole period..
if theres no problem you can trust the engine at least..
Check for irregular noises in engine bay..
if possible find a lift and examine under the car.. check the whole area for anything that dont seem normal..and also check for rust..
Check the bolts ,nuts for wear and some extra work..
if possible have a compression test when the engine is cold..This will give good idea about the engine..
if possible have a vacuum test..
check the wear on steering , it must be compatible with the mileage of car..
if there are rare or no stone chips on the bonnet its painted..
check the dead pixels on the display..
if its smells sweet (or coolant) inside the car when the heater working heater matrix may leak which is a long job.. a guaranteed method is add some new antifreeze for coolant and if it smells alcoholic inside the car it also may indicate leak..

Going back for a second look today, but all seemed great last night. Engine is in tip top condition, gave it a spin, seemed pretty spot on too. Finally an Omega with some gonads! Sounds like its been looked after to me mechanically. Its as quiet on idle as the missus 08 Astra.
No oil in the engine bay whatsoever. No cam belt history though afaik, so I reckon thats got to be done. Will try and get under it and have a gander but I think I've finally found a good'un. Few rust spots on the bodywork & a creaky passenger door, but nowt major.
Will post some pics up if/when I get it.

Sounds good. Where did you say it was... exactly?!
Run it hot and sniff for oil. Those rocker cover gaskets can be a bugger on the old ones. Pizels on display unit can be a bugger too 0 - and expensive.
As already said many times the cam-belt is a must.
