Title: transmission whine - louder as I get faster!
Post by: jjleonard on 06 March 2009, 15:18:39
02 plate facelift elite 2.6 auto. In the last week I've noticed a whine in the drivetrain - whilst driving it sounds like it's coming from the rear of the car.

It increases in pitch as I speed up from about 30 - almost becoming a shriek at 80+ mph! Volume increases too, and has got worse over the last week - medium volume radio will drown it out at any speed, but when listening to radio 4 the whine is easy to hear!

I'm due to get the car up on axle stands this weekend and check for play in the bearings front and rear, along with any snagging brake components etc. Any ideas what else I should check whilst I'm there?

The noise is roadspeed related rather than engine speed related - i've checked this over the last week by holding the autobox in gear and swapping between them quickly, but the pitch is directly related to the road speed.

Any suggestions as to further things to be checked would be appreciated.  :y
