Title: Xenon Headlights on Elite Estate
Post by: daveball on 02 March 2009, 12:29:20
The headlights on my Elite have never seemed good, I always thought that xenons would be superb. They seem far too low on both dipped and main beam. I recently get an error message on the display saying"Headlight Field/Vision, even though headlights are not switched on. What does this mean?  I assume my model Elite has self adjusting heads, so how do I check if they are not working properly, i.e a crude check if possible without using specialist equipment, and are there any ways of detecting sensor faults etc. The car by the way is a 1999 3.0 Elite, I thinks its mini-facelift.

Regards

dave

probably the sensor/s have become disconnected.

on my facelift saloon, i have two sensors, on each passenger side suspension corner. on mine, the rear sensor had simply popped out

The system needs to talk to a diagnostic reader. When my car showed the same fault is the the front sensor that was fubar'd. It could aslo be one of the levelling motors in the lamps themselves.

I would check the links on the sensors to start with.  They have little ball joints which can seize/pop out.  There is one on the near side wishbone and one on the rear trailing arm (I think).

If need be you can buy replacements from Vx (6-7 quid as I recall - one of mine was mysteriously broken immediately after an MOT..)

Sorry about late reply. Thanks for info.  I assume the headlight lens moves in some  way, is it possible to provoke and see this movement to check the levelling actators/motors are working. For example jacking up a corner of the car.

Nine times out of 10 the headlights internal adjusters are broken :(

I've got 6 sets of headlights and out of the 12 lights only 1 has working adjusters :'(

I had headlamp fault message on dash display. This turned out to be the rear level sensor full of water - seal had failed.

It's 99% certain to be a sensor fault and when you see where they are situated you'll see why. Failure after MoT is quite common as the suspension has been jacked during the test.

If main beam is too low you'll likely find the adjusters broken as mentioned previously.

The xenon system is required by law to default to maximum dip if a fault is detected in order to prevent dazzling of oncoming drivers. These lights can damage your retina if set too high.
