I wish I could. I really feel bad for him :(

It's OK now, Marks on the case.

Cheers guys, ended up just carrying on. Looks like it'll work out.

It runs! Drove it home, 20 miles. Now; shower, bed, and don't look for me in the morning! 8-)

Good news, though I never doubted you ;)
Did it look like crank seal?

Don't think so. Oil everywhere except belt. Looked like it ran down behind the back timing belt cover.
I was pretty worried for a bit about that stud on the backing plate. Wasn't sure that there were enough threads left. Left out the thicker washer and it seems fine.

It must have been pretty dark by the time you finished!

As suspected (and knowing your covers leak) its probably coming from cam gaskets...
I am not clever enough to comment on the washer thing (Marks_DTM, Ronnie McB, Matchless and countless others are the real experts around here).

I would have pulled it inside if I had thought it might take that long! Was doing it just outside shutter door, so some light. Couldn't move it once I started b/c of incline. Was using the top of the incline to put the nose higher in the air so that I didn't have to bend over quite so far.
