Title: At what point should cooling fan kick in?
Post by: jerry on 06 March 2009, 00:12:13
Sorry if I'm being thick here guys, but at what point (temp) should the cooling fan kick in? When I first got the mig I noticed that the temp rarely got above 90 and , unlike any other car I'd had, after a reasonable journey even after I'd switched off the ignition the fan would remain on for a short while. Ive recently had a new oil cooler and dont know if, in process of fitting it, somethings happened but now the fan doesnt continue after ignition turned off and engine temp is higher. Given recent cold weather, I tend to have heating on at about 22 and engine temp is still at around 90. However, if I sit in traffic the temp rises quite quickly to 95 and slowly goes slightly above that before fan cuts in and it drops again to about 90. The other day, in heavy traffic, it rose quite quickly again and I put heating on higher to help draw some of the heat out but am concerned that temp seems to get higher now than it used to do in the summer. Is this a sign of a potential problem with stat or fan or is it normal and I'm just being paranoid? :-/

Different cars have different gauges, and seeing as you haven't mentioned which engine, can't give you a temp ;)

But slow speed fans should come on just above mid-point on the gauge (so around 96C prefacelift, 91/92C on facelifts), and high speed a couple of C above that.  Low speed ones will stay on even after engine off until fan switch (in rad) below temp.

A/C will bring on 1 or more low speed fans as well.

Sorry to jump in this thread but I've just noticed mention of the different temperatures of facelift and prefacelift cars.

Having owned both types, originally a 1995 2.0 GLS estate and now a 2004 2.2 CDX estate the needles are in the same physical position for both.

I cannot believe that my newer car runs over 5 degrees cooler, I think that the gauges for both types are the same but for some reason the scales were changed to show a lower temperature on the facelifts, unless someone here knows different.

Sorry, been away for a bit. Mine is an S reg 2.5v6 auto. Sounds like Im being a bit paranoid, just thought it a bit strange that fan no longer continues for a bit after ignition switched off and that guage now reaches about 95 whereas it rarely used to get above 90. Doing the same journey as before too. Main thing is that it doesnt mean a potential problem. :y
