Title: Coolant Level Query
Post by: Greg2041 on 08 March 2009, 11:44:01
Okay so last year my heater matrix packed up and was replaced by a main agent.  Apparently a horrible job and not cheap but it seems fine now.

But 8 months and 8000 miles later the coolant level is low.  Is this normal? I've driven 100s of thousands of miles before but have never needed to top up.  So two quick questions.

1)  Is this normal?
2)  What should I top it up with?

Many thanks

Greg

I doubt that your loss of coolant is related to the change of heater matrix after so long. Usual point of coolant loss is heater by-pass valve (behind driver's side of the engine, although it could be leaking from anywhere.
Top up with 50:50 mix of what ever type of coolant is already in there, I would suspect that if your dealer did the job then the coolant is pink, so use the same.  :y

Thanks for the info.  I will pick-up some pink stuff.

I did ask the garage about this coolant valve thingy and they said it was fine and it was pressure tested too.

But is it usual to have to top up coolant between services?  Just wondered whether it evaporates or gets used up elsewhere.

The heater by-pass valve can fail but only leak at various heating settings. When mine failed again, last summer, it only leaked when the A/C was on. Have a good look at the back of the driver's side of the V at various heat settings. It could still be your problem.

No it's not usual to have to top up coolant between services.

Hmm, sounds worrying.  Where does this valve sit?
