Title: Autobox level plug rounded off
Post by: jjleonard on 07 March 2009, 15:30:42
ARRGGGHHH. I got all my bits and pieces together, jacked the car up, only to discover that someone has been there before me and rounded off the 13mm head.

Any ideas what I can do now? access is extremely limited - I take it that I'll have to take the whole sump off, in which case how much atf do I need to refill it?

Cheers
John.

Decent pair of vice-grips failing that mole-grips will do.

Why is it I never think of the obvious things? Thanks Andy - I think this will have to be tried tomorrow.

Try grinding two flat edges on the nut,if access is possible with the grinder.

Having spent two bloody hours on it today, I've had enough. Going to go to the local stealers tomorrow, pick up another plug, and beg the use of a ramp and a grinder to get the old plug off.

My major problem, as I've discovered today, is the cheapo halfords jack I have - it can't get the car high enough to use the high setting on my axle stands, so squeezing underneath is a challenge!

I did see a tool yesterday in Machine Mart. They look just like a set of sockets but they have a sprial type shape inside. These lock on to the damaged nut and then turns just like a normal socket. Can't remember the price but might save you some pain. I'll have a look see if I can find it on web...

Here you go... not sure if that is the intended purpose or even if it will work - maybe you could ask someone...

Nice one - cheers chris.

I'm going to give it a go at the stealers tomorrow, then try this toolset if I run out of options!

hmmm.

I picked up a 13mm version of that from B&Q this morning for just that reason - but unfortunately there isn't enough room 'above' the bolt to get the self locking head in!  :-/
