Ok it all began about 4 weeks ago when a misterious vibration began whilst driving in traffic at about 10 mph, it ressembled a manual car being in the wrong gear, when the car changes from 1st and drives before changing into 2nd and then 3rd there is a vibration that you can feel through the car, if you drive like miss daisy its not there also when driving like lewis hamilton its not there it is only under normal driving conditions it happens.
If you drop the car into neutral the vibration goes, I had the gearbox oil checked by my local specialist and all ok.
The car seems to change gear normally and does not hold or change too soon, now at a dead end and not sure where to look next, i know if i book it in to the stealers or the specialist they will get pound signs rolling in there eyes.
After a short run there is a strange rubber smell almost like something is overheating?
Does anyone have any ideas of things to try next, I have checked the service history and cant see the gearbox oil or filters being changed would this possibly be the cause?? the miggy is 21 miles away from 100k.
I have been told changing them can cause the box to drop gears, is this the case ??

When the garge checked the level, did they not comment on bad coluring (dark brown) or burnt smell?
As a general rule, changing the ATF and changing/cleaning the filter is the first step before taking further any auto box problems.
Vx say that the ATF is 'for life', apart in the case of heavy urban use e.g. Taxi, in which case they recommend a change every 60-70k, but in practice all Vx auto boxes should have the AFT replaced at 50-60k.
Also, keep in mind that dropping the two autobox sumps and changing the fluid will only replace about half the ATF in the system... but this is how it goes.

..and after changing the ATF, get the firmware updated on the autobox ECU.

the guys in the garage said the transmission level was low they put 3/4 of a pint in it !!! other than that they said all ok.
whats involves with the autobox ecu update, is it a trip to the stealers or can the TECH2 boys on here do it ?

But.. this will not cure your autobox problems... so change the ATF first and only if it sorted-out the problem then get the ECU updated.

Don't want to hijack someone elses thread, but what does the update do on the Auto box ECU, don't think mines has had this done, had an oil change at 55k, all seems ok with it, no probs!!

Car has to be mini-facelift and upwards (98+), and it will make a noticeable difference to the way the autobox shifts gears. Much smoother, and the car feels stronger.

cannot see an oil and filter change cure a transmission whine myself,
however i'm willing to be educated.
